Default Building your own heavy duty rear end?

Hello all,
As you all can see I'm new to the board, but something that has me realing is the rear end situation for these cars. It's so perplexing that no one has built a better mouse trap for cheap! Oh, well you'll just have to plunk down $2500 for a Moser 12 bolt, thats it? Isn't there anyone who has taken a $300 Chevy Pick up 12 bolt, a welder, and some measuring devices and then built a good rear end for less than a grand? - Tom
