Another fact: The harder a material is, the more brittle it is.

Just thought I'd share, everyone I tell this too thinks I'm full of BS.

Unless you want a chem. e. job on the gulf coast. The chemical/oil biz is limping right now.

Softer stuff will give/bend a little before breaking, while really hard stuff will just snap. A good example is the different grades of aluminium: ie: T5 will give/bend when it exceeds its strength, while T6 just snaps with little to no play.

I guess you can consider glass and plastic. Glass is hard while plastic is fairly soft in comparison. When you drop the two, the glass will obviously break, while the plastic wont.

Im pretty sure you can crush a diamond into smaller parts, you just cant scratch it. Like if you take a diamond ring and scrape it along the concrete the diamond will be unharmed, but if you hit it with a hammer it can break into smaller pieces. DONT TRY THIS AT HOME...I learned it in sophomore year chemistry and Im not exactly sure on the trueness unless someone can back me up.

Drill bits are a perfect example. They don't bend, they snap. Same thing with screws. That is why nails are used in framing a house instead of screws. Nails bend, Screws snap.

Yeah, that's absolutely true.

Think about it this way, ever seen someone running a Chromoly cage on the street? How about after they hit a big pothole? SNAP!

That's why Steel is suggested for street/strip applications and harder stuff like Chromoly is suggested for race-only apps.

Diamonds oxidize too. In fact Diamonds are NOT forever. Over a period of a couple of thousand years they disappear into carbon dioxide gas. hahhaha.

now what's this about something harder than diamond?? I hope my g/f doesn't find out. Pretty soon she might want a Carbon nanotube for an engagement ring. haaahha.

in truth what cause my eye about this post was the oxidation properties of the aluminum....
got me to thinking....
would it be possable to make an aluminum based paint?
then make part of the cureing prosses to oxidize it into a super hard shell?
making an almost scratch proof paint?

that, my freinds, would be paint that i would pay ALOT for...
