I owned an LT1 for three years. Only issues with the engine were opticrap and intake manifold leak. Other than that, my TCS ceased to function (and I discovered it the hard way, almost lost it).
I now have owned an LS1 for the last five years and never had an issue with the engine, only had to replace the synchros last year.
LT1's advantages:
Better sound
Cheaper to modify
LS1's advantage:
Lighter
More reliable
More power
Better/flatter torque curve
