AIR pump noise ... help.

AIR pump noise ... help. I have a 98 LS1 and recently noticed a whining noise when the air pump comes on. It does it only after I have driven it, let it set, then start it up again. Took it to the chevy dealer and they indicated that it's within specifications. There's no SES light. Any thoughts? Perhaps it's something else?
Depending on the severity of the whine they usually emit a audible whine that is the normal function of the unit. It will only do it on cold start up because the function of the air pump is to minimize cold start emmisions. Or it sometimes comes on after a short drive then let the vehicle sit.

Get ya an off road Y pipe and throw the air pump away! 
Unless you have to pass emissions, I guess. I got one off my 01 SS laying around wating to be thrown out. Let me know if ya want it, pay shipping and I'll give it to ya.
