Default temperature effect on gauges

Hey the last 2 days it has gotten extrememly cold here at night, and when I have gone out to start my car, the speedometer will jump around at like 60-70 mph then everything will zero (tach included) then it will return to normal. My trip will also resets when this happens. It has happened 2 times now. Any ideas?

Low battery voltage can cause the sweep on start up. I'd start there. There's also a TSB for the '99 cars, but it doesn't mention the gauge sweep. #99-08-49-009 Trip Odometer Resets to Zero (Exchange/Install Instrument Cluster).

Could be voltage could be they are just loose. I would take the guages out and clean the contacts on the back.

my camaro did the same thing. like what he said check ur battery. has the car had a hard time turning over when u try to start it? go to any shop or autozone and have them load test the car. but my vote is for the dieing battery, this is the time of the year they go out.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Dude, you have a 99. Thats all I needed to know. I asked the same question a while back. I have a 99 also and mine will do it every time when its cold. The gauges will peg out out very fast and then zero out and then correct themsleves. If you will notice you odometer also resets everytime it does it.

Seems that this was a problem with 99's.

I've also got a '99, it does this almost every time I start the car.

My '99 resets all the time when it is cold out. I did not want to spend $300 to cure it when it only messes up on startup. Tom

Haha I'm glad I'm not the only one. I guess this, piston slap, and a few other things I just have to put up with to own an LS1.

The first time I did it I was like Wow WTF.

I will try the battery idea, I checked it before winter it was fine, but maybe it was a bit weak and the winter has taken its toll on it.

Wierd, it was -6 outside, I started my car, and didn't do it. But I'm sure after it sits out for another 5 hrs before work it will do it.

Battery check tomorrow for sure.

It won't be a battery issue IMO. For one thing when the car is running it's not running off of the battery, but rather the Alternator. It's more than likely a connector in the harness. Since the cold seems to affect it so much I'd suspect a connector outside of the interior of the car since I'm sure you have the heater on inside ?

Funny, when I had my dyno done, the operator saw the gauges sweep when he started the car and said, "Woah! that's awesome!!!" he thought it was some sort of mod.

Cracked me up.
