Probably pretty well, although I don't know how well the gas mileage would have been. Perhaps that was the reason GM laid off shoving it in? Would have been bad-*** and would have towed very well. L98's had awesome TQ.

How fast would you say an 89 GTA is? My neighbor has one, the torque makes that thing feel way faster then it is.

I've driven all three and owned two LS1's. all three are good choices, but there is a reason, GM replaces the older engines, for newer designs

I think the 89 GTA was a 350 L98/700R4. That ran high 14's low 15's stock I *think*. There was that turbo 3.8 car that was pretty much a Grand National but no one bought it because it wasn't a V8...too bad, it was quicker than the V8. I wonder how many of thoses still exist.

The 89 TTA was just a Trans Am. The GTA was different as it had more upscale options and most came with the L98.

Like others said though, if the thing is running well, expect 14's at around 95mph

My friends older brother had one and sold it with 19,000 miles for 28k last year. It was a great car.

How fast were the TTAs in the quarter? Anybody have any idea how much they put down at the wheels?

I have read anywhere from high to mid 13s at low 100s.

Don't the 700R4 and 4L60E have the same gear ratios? I thought that 3.08's were also offered?

Reason i bring it up is my bro has a 89 Formula 350 TPI and it seems to be geared slightly less than the 95 TA my other bro had. Both had 245/50/16's?

60mph ~ 2000RPM TA
60mph ~ 1900RPM Formula

I own both a LS1 and a L98, my Formula has super low end, but runs out of air like everyone said around 4600 rpm in any gear. When the tranny rebuild came, I lowered the shift point a little bit, therefore not letting the engine run too high with no air. Probably the worst thing about the L98, is that from a freeway roll, you will never get a jump on anything.

I've had my daily driver LS1 for about 2 weeks now, and IMO is just a beast compared to the L98. It's gonna suck when winter is over, and I pull out the Knight Rider and have it go slower than my daily. LOL

Actually, a TTA is a GTA. www.gtasourcepage.com has some literature from GM that titles them as GTAs. Notice Thirdgen Trans Ams in 89 had side vents on the fenders, GTAs and TTAs did not. That is the most obvious sign it is based on a GTA. Plus the gold cross lace rims that came w/ every GTA.

350/700R4 was standard on a GTA w/ the 305 and the 5 speed both being credit options.

Those vortec's were genI sbc's with a new head/mainifold/injection design. I think it was GM's last effort to keep the sbc alive in modern forum. They are great motors, no tick, slap, valve train noise like the 5.3's are having.

Was a Vortec 305 any better then the TBI ones? Do they have any potential compared to the other ones?

Yeah, I screwed that up. The standard gear for the 305 was a 3.08. There were no 3.08's available for the 350 though. It was probably a 2.77.

As for the transmissions, the 4L60E is just the electronic version of the 700R4

Woops. I just figured they were simply a Trans Am. I guess that would make sense though since the TTA had like every option. As for credit options, that's would be why I said most were 350's.

I think some people forget that the Vortec series did start on the Gen1's. And actually, it started back with the 4.3 in the good ole S-series Nonetheless, IMO, the 5.3 is far superior to the 5.7.

Of course the L98 245hp < LT1 275hp < Ls1 310hp
Its more like 250 < 300 < 350

Of course, this is from proven dyno pulls, not GM marketing garbage, so it could (not) be wrong.

Which L98 are we talking about here, L98 L98 or L98 B2L? The L98 is really a 'Vette motor w/ alum heads while the B2L is the Iron Head version. At least I think that is correct.

I think GM was pretty well on as far as L98 HP specs. When I dynoed my 305 LB9 it was within a few horsies of being right on w/ factory specs.

I'm pretty sure everyone is really refering to the B2L L98. I'm sure most people don't know the difference.
