Ls1????
I currently own a 99 GTP (Grand Prix). I am wanting to sell it and get an LS1 perferably a Z28, SS, WS6 but I don't want to spend over 13000 on it. My questoin is if you were in my shoes would you sell the GTP and get an LS1. My dad has a 98 Z28 and I absolutly love it. I have another vehicle to drive as a daily driver so the car would just be a cruiser and my toy. If any of you can help with some pros and cons on the LS1 it would be greatly appreciated. How easy are they to mod and be pushin around 330-350HP? Is it easy to work on them without taking them to the dealer? Just let me know some things that the average joe doesn't know wabout them. Thank you in advance.

Well if I were you I would get the LS1 you can get a 98 for under 10k now. Are you asking 330-350 flywheel of rear wheel because my 98 rated at 305 is pushing close to 325 stock to the flywheel. Exhaust and intake will put you easily at 350 to the flywheel. things are kinda tight in the engine but here at LS1tech you can ALWAYS get advice and support from people that know what they are doing. I have a friend with a GTP with a pulley cold air intake, and catback and I smoke him everytime even when I was stock.
BTW are you from clinton MA?

I'm just trying to get some ideas. The GTP's are fairly quick but I have always wanted an LS1. V8 RWD can't beat it. I'm wanting around 330-350 at the flywheel. Just don't know what the quickest and most efficient way is.
I'm from Clinton IN, but up at school in Muncie.

well, most LS1's have around 300RWHP in stock form... Figure about a 15% drivetrain loss, and you are at ~345hp at the flywheel... in totally stock form(yeah... just a bit underrated from the factory )
Anywho, if you wanted 330-350RWHP you'd need a few bolt ons... full exhaust, intake, etc... And as said previously, 98's are not too hard to find for under 10k, with decent miles. The LS1 is a strong motor, and many people are having no problems with 100+K miles on them. So, if you want it... GO FOR IT!!!

Thanks everybody. I'm going to go and look at one tomorrow. It's a 99 that has hood damage and needs a driver's side door and drivers side quarter panel. If it has low miles on it like around 50k and the damage isn't too bad do you think that I should get it. They want 6400 OBO. The hood is no big deal because I would prolly end up putting an SS hood on it. but how hard is it to get a door for it.

330-350 hp at the flywheel?
whats the quickest most efficiant way to get there?
insert key into ignition.... push in clutch...turn key till car starts...... release key... hit gas pedal.... release clutch.... welcome to your goal....
bud the average m6 ls1 puts 305-325 RWHP at sea level....
the m6 drivetrain get about 15% perisitac loss... 350 hp - 15% = 297.5 RWHP
bone stock you will have 350-380 hp at the crank(or flywheel) how bout making your goal something more fun... like 400 RW hp..

Try to get a chance to cold start any potential LS1's because some have piston slap while others do not. It's not a big problem but it is annoying. I was lucky and got one with no piston slap at all. Other then that check the tires for good tread life and shop around. Don't be afraid to walk away from a good deal when there may be a great deal around the corner.
For your budget you'll be better off looking at lower mileage Z28's, Formulas or Trans Am's. SS's and WS6's tend to be more expensive and you might have to settle for a high mileage one to get it for 13K or less. I'd rather have a Z28 with low miles then a SS with high miles but that's just me.
Good luck

Checked out theh Z28 I mentioned above. The car was a piece. It needed a whole new driver side and back and rear bumper. the interior was all banged up and the seats were bent from the crash. It didn't even have power windows. Not goin to get that because they wanted 6500 for it. I'd give them 2500 for it.

U might want to think about doing up the GTP if money is a concern. U could do alot to that car with 13000 grand. but if u want an ls1 go ahead and do it just make sure u have a nice cash flow because once u get it you will want to start doing things to it and it never ends.

I have already done up the GTP. I'm wanting a RWD V8 They are a lot more fun to drive. Somebody has offered a great amount for the GTP and it's hard to not pass up. He is giving me almost 2000 more than what it is really worth.
