The knock sensors are under the intake manifold and over time can mialfunction after repeated washing. I don't cover up any thing, i give everything medium pressure or so and wash it clean. Pretty much common sense, don't blast 100psi on the fuse boxes, pcm. but a little water won't hurt it. I was my engine bay about once a month.

yeah if ur carefull and don't use crazy water pressure u should be able to use soap and water, scrub the stubborn spots with a sponge or brush, hose off with medium pressure and be carefull around electric areas and such. Once done start the car and let the engine dry itself, and ur done.

I do mine by hand....bottle of simple green and a rag.
It takes a long time, but you can be mroe thorough and there's much less chance of screwing anything up.
takes me about an hour or so to get my engine compartment all nice and clean again.
