Question 98 vs. latermodel

By the time I change rearends, torque convertors and start to turn this 98 into the antichrist I was just wondering should I trade it in on a newer model say a 2002 with a 6-speed. before I waste alot of money converting a A4 with the dereaded 2.73 rear end? What ya think?

I hate changing stuff. I would just sell it and get a newer one.

You should try an get an 02 Z28 or SS with a six speed. You'll have loads of fun, plus have an excellent platform to do mods.

IN my book, the 98 were the best year F-body.. The actually had a temp guage that worked... Keep the 98... Autos with a stall will whip 98% of the 6 speeds out there.

Ony Issue I ever had with a 98 is the perimeter bolt style valve cover.

You have a 98 A4 and you want to either swap the transmission or buy a newer F-body that comes with a six speed?

It sounds like you want to get rid of it because it's an auto, not because it's a 98. How would you be wasting money with the conversion? Selling it and buying a 2002 model will cost ya. The 2.73 rear isn't all that bad, and gears aren't very expensive to swap. If you get an M6 you'll be looking for a whole new rear end instead of different gears.

I was in the same boat as you man, i wanted to get rid of the 98, get an 01 or 02 WS6 M6 and mod from there, but if i do that, the car will cost around 17k, , lets say i get 8 out of mine, thats still 9k i would have to pay off while or before paying for mods, and 9k in mods is more than enough to get your 98 a tranny swap, rear, cam, longtubes, gears, and a tune and that car will scoot, or you can even go faster and save 2k (presuming it costs about 3k for a tranny swap) and get a converter installed for 1k, then get some heads. it just didnt seem worth it to sell my car for a newer one if i was planning on modding

Thats just about whats going to happen is just keep the 98 and drive it. I called several places about getting gears put in but everyone said it was a waste of money unless I held out and buy a 12 bolt conversion thats like $2400 + what ever the convertor is going to run me before I start trying to change the heads/cam I know I need to start with the gears/convertor but I can't find anyone in my area that will change my convertor all I hear is no one wants to work on it.

98s are very cost effective to keep and upgrade. A 02 will cost you 2x as much to buy. So selling your 98 and taking a massive hit on a car thats just a tiny bit better doesnt make sense. Mod your 98 the way you want, and you'll still be ahead of the game.

thats weird, a converter is some bolts and a few clicks away from being in, shift kit and a cooler are both pretty important too, where do you live, there has to be a performance shop somewhere, your stock 10bolt is fine for now w/an a4, an 3.73's still wont hurt, one of my friends down the street has a z runing 11.0 on the stock 10 bolt, and 2.73's, but he is about to upgrade to 3.73's to break into the 10's, do the converter and see how u like it, then do gears

and if u look on thunderracing.com you will find that they have a complete rear end kit for about 450$ It has the stronger cover that loads the bearings and makes a hell of a strength difference.I know a few ppl in my area that have sub 11sec f-bodies runnin the stock 10 bolt with just that cover with no probs at all.
Plus you having the A4 car actually makes it easier on you in the rear end dept. The M6 cars are the ones that usually demolish rear ends with few mods.
