1st character- Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured. For example: U.S.A.(1or4), Canada(2)

2nd character- Identifies the manufacturer. For example; Chevrolet(1), General Motors(G), Pontiac(2or5).

3rd character- Identifies vehicle type or manufacturing division.

4th to 8th characters- Identifies vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc.

9th character- Identifies VIN accuracy as check digit.

10th character- Identifies the model year. For example: 1993(P), 1994(R), 1995(S), 1996(T), 1997(V), 1998(W), 1999(X), 2000(Y)------2001(1), 2002(2), 2003(3)

11th character- Identifies the assembly plant for the vehicle.

12th to 17th characters- Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled of the manufacturers assembly line.

im just curious because i have a 2000 TA and in the vin i believe it is marked as a formula, and when i bought it, it was a TA. i need to clarify this. i found somewhere that said that TA's had a w in the vin and the formulas had a v. i have a v and not a w so WTF...do i have to go kill the people i bought it from?

I do believe all Trans Ams Started as formulas and got a different body kit put on them. I think the formula tag was for the LS1 engine. I could be wrong about the code, but I'm sure someone will chime in who knows a little better than I do.

Oh, look inside your door at your RPO codes and you'll see a Y82 also stating you have a Trans Am ( You'll have a WS6 on there too if you have a true WS6 )

"2G2FS" is a Firebird
"2G2FV" is a Formula or Trans Am.

PM me the last 8 of your VIN and I can look it up for you.
