So, basically... high mileage isn't a problem for the engine... it's mainly the transmission and driveline?

No not really. It's a matter of how well it was taken care of. A 200,000 mile engine can be in better condition than a 20,000 mile engine if it was maintained and the 20,000 mile wasn't. So mileage doesn't have everything to do with it. As far as driveline, the rear-ends suck so you can break one anytime. The transmission wears out in automatics due to mileage, but mainly if it has been driven hard. The 3-4 clutch packs will go out from shiting hard into gear often. As far as the manual if you miss gears it will shorten the life incredibly. So basically a well maintained car will last a LONG time.

What's wrong with the rear ends?
Are there upgrades?

Man I only have 28k on my car. I'm real happy to hear that our Gen lll's are that durable! And our rear ends are very weak. Do a search and you'll find 100's of post's on the subject.
