Default Insurance Bind.....

Hey guys, back again with another problem..... Heres the deal. Right now my dad is paying for my insurance under his work. His rules are......
1 ticket and i am done
Only mods i can do are bolt ons, no engine work even when i paid for the car myself
wont let me run at the track
he is real **** about everyhting i do to my car and its getting on my nerves.

I know for a fact i cannot afford full coverage being a 16 year old. The car will only be driving half the year, other half its being stored. My job only goes for half of the year also. well like 6-8 months depending on weather. I bring in about a grand a month ish working in the summer. Now i really want my own insurance so i can do whatever i want to my car and what not and not have to worry about getting my car taken away. However i cannot afford it. What about not full coverage, is just liability worth it and would i even be able to afford that? If you were in my situation, what would you do? Thanks guys. I have a 100% clean record so far and will be 17 in November

Full coverage, on a 16 year old, in a high risk car will probably cost you $200-$500/mo, so I would just leave the insurance in your dads name (assuming it has full coverage on it now). Just drive it the way it is, enjoy it, and when you're older (read: make more money) you'll be able to mod it or buy another car down the road.

16 full coverage on a T/A WoW talk about getting raped, liability only isn't really worth it, it'll only cover the damage to the other person, and their vehicle, and your medical bills, then you'll be left with a wreck, and no money to fix it.
I'm with Spanky, enjoy it as it is, do the bolt ons (it does make quite a difference believe it or not) and enjoy driving a Trans Am @16 (my first car was a Gran Torino that used more oil than gas)
Your dad may be getting on your nerves, but he's just trying to protect you from killing yourself with a 300 hp car (one day you may understand, if you have kids of your own)

My opinion?

Kiss his *** and thank him for making insurance payments for you. Who gives a diddle if you can't mod the car past bolt ons or take it to the track. Insurance must cost a fortune for that car and I'm guessing your dad is getting a good deal if you don't screw it up. I had to pay for EVERYTHING for my cars myself, did it suck? Yes but it taught me to respect general "laws" so that I don't screw myself over and because of that I have I'm going to say one of the lowest insurance rates for a sports car for someone my age that I know of.

Another personal opinion of mine is a 16 year old should DEFINATELY not own an LS1, that's way way way too much car for an inexperienced driver, I don't care if they have been driving sence they were 12, until you get some REAL road experience.

I only pay 42 bucks a month for FULL coverage on my TA and I'm only 23 years old, so I do have an idea what I'm talking about. So yeah, my opinion is that you should be thanking him for doing what he is for you, not "getting on my nerves" cause without him, that car would be sitting in the garage collecting dust and obviously you can understand that.

You should count your blessings that he's willing to fork over the ungodly high rates for a 16 y/o on a TA. Mine was $200/month in my mom's name when i was 17. It was over $350/month in my name. Don't bitch that it's paid for. Besides, on $1 grand a month take home only 8 months out of the year you will be pretty much tapped for bolt-on's for a while anyways.

if you have a loan on the car I'm pretty sure you have to have full coverage....

If you can get your dad to pay for your insurance... I wouldn't be looking for other options... you're not going to get a good deal on insurance...

You already have a pretty fast car... I'd just hold off on anything that would **** your dad off (his rules aren't very unrealistic... and probably a good thing) ... save the money then once you demonstrate you're a responsible driver talk to your dad and see if he'll be more lax on the rules....

Can a 16 or 17 year old even get their own insurance? I'm not sure how that works... legally any contracts they sign are void... so you can't actually own the car (title would have to be in your dads name regardless of who paid for it) ... not sure how the insurance companies would view that ...

Were I in your situation I'd be thanking my dad every day for letting me have a high performance car and kissing his *** for paying the insruance for a teenager w/little driving experience behind a 320hp vehicle!) ... were I the dad you wouldn't like me though heh

haha have your dad keep paying to insure it and do all the boltons aka pully, ls6 intake manifold, ported TB, exhaust, then work on the suspention and beef up the tranny...you can make that car go fast with a pimped out suspention so you hook like a crazy.

if you can spend the money to beef up the tranny and rear end so when you start making serious power you don't have the worries....thats my problem i have over 500 RWHP and a stock bottom end stock tranny and stock rearend(besides gears)

good luck and thank the lord your dad is paying for insurance. i pay $1,353 every 6 months and thats with the cheapest company i could find at the state minimums. i am 20 BTW

Alright guys. You make me feel very greatful for what i have. I guess i was just getting greedy as i see all these people building and racing there F-Bodies but i guess i dont realize you guys are mostly in your mid 20's. I should jsut be greatful for what i have. Thanks guys..... plus i just realized this could help. I could get full suspension parts so i hook and maybe a 12 bolt so when i can build up i dont have to worry about breaking. Thanks guys! Well last time i talked to my dad he said i can add all the mods i want with my money jsut nothing internal to directly to the engine. What all do you believe this classifies. Im sure i can do full exhaust, stall, intake, suspension...... prolly all. Oh well once i finish all those ill jsut save so once i can do whatever i want....... Ill have a lot of money saved for it. Thanks again

Be thankful. I was in a similar situation and ending up blowing $12,000 worth of savings just to make insurance and car note payments while I was also trying to mod the car, all on income similar to yours. Just drive the car and enjoy it. There will always be someone faster, always be something else to do or improve on. If you can't find contentment in where your car is at now, the modding will only hold you for a while, then you'll be wanting to do something else again. While you're paying on a car, you have to have full coverage, and full coverage for me at 17 yrs. old with a Trans Am was $260/month. Car note was $380 a month. Between gas and food and the other little expenses of life, especially since you aren't working 4-6 months out of the year, things are going to be tight financially. Racing and modding is fun, but trust me, $12,000 of blown savings, and another $12,000 in credit debt later, live your life, have fun, and learn to be content with what you have. There are others with far less (look at all the people in TX and LA who lost everything). Enjoy life and be thankful you've got parents that will help support your love for cars.

If the only modding restrictions he put on you are no internals, there's TONS of things you can do. Suspension is a fantastic idea, IMO. Not letting you run it at the track is silly, though... not speeding on the street is so much easier if you have a separate outlet for speed. Unfortunately, I'm not the boss of you....

Be EXTRA CAREFUL about not getting a ticket, since he isn't even allowing you a single one... you never know when some hidden cop is going to jump on you for some tiny infraction. Don't want your dad taking your car away just because someone wanted to ticket you for not making a complete stop before a right turn at an empty intersection... happened to a friend of mine.

I had a 1990 Camaro RS V6 when I was 16 and my parents paid for my insurance on that, and even with that car it was decently steep. [rant] I'm 21 (going on 22 this October) and my insurance is still $200+ per month for full coverage on my Firehawk. Yes, I know it has a lot to do with state and what not. But I have a completely clean record. [/rant]

Enjoy the luxury you have!! As many have said, there are PLENTY of bolt-ons to go around! Save up your money (for perhaps bolt-ons... ) and enjoy not having to pay for insurance!! And thank your Dad for such a sweet ride at the age of 16!!

I am a parent of two boys. Whatever you decide to do...do the following right now. Step back from the keyboard/computer, go find your parents, hug them (yea your dad too), tell them thank you, and sincerely tell them you love them. Everything else will take care of itself. Enjoy!

I think its pretty much been covered. Theres plenty of stuff you can do w/out making him mad. Be happy he is paying. And if you really want to be 'grown up' and pay for yourself so you can mod, then work 80 hrs a week like I did during the summer to afford the 'habit'. (In less than a year I went from stock LS1 - 400 hp, paying for car payments and insurance, so it can be done.)

Insurance sucks man. I'm 20 with a clean record and I will have to pay at least $400 a month for full coverage on a TA.

i'm trying to figure out why the bolt-on thing would be a problem. I dont have the same mod cap you do, i even have the money to do what i want and i dont pay all of my insurance. i guess i'm lucky too, but my point is what the hell did you plan on doing to the car at 16? cam it? i'd say your dad is pretty reasonable if thats the case. i'm young too but i'm in college though, so my parents know money gets spread pretty thin several times a year.

Some insurance companies allow you to take the insurance off the car when its not being driven. I think alstate is one of them. You can call them for example and tell them to add the car for the weekend, not paying for insurance when its parked at home. Or for example when your not driving it. Some companies will do that.
I just switched insurance cos. My insurance now is $200 a mth, for 3 full coverage cars, and one truck with liabiltiy only......its Met Life.
Oh I totally agree, and at 16 you have a stinking awesome car, put up with the rules and be glad your car is 100x better then 99% of everyone your age!
