Default sluggish from dead stop

I just purchased a'98 WS6 A4. It runs great from a roll but if you stomp it from a dead stop it just eases away like the TCS is on in the rain. I mean it REALLY has no pull for second or so then it comes in. Someone please help! Thank you.

These cars are haevy as a ****. Couple that with the fact that the LS1 doesnt hit peak torque until 4500 rpm's and that your answer. If you have 2.73 gears then I feel sorry for you. A good gear for an automatic is 3.42 if you are not gonna be drag racing it. If it were mine I would have 3.73.

Might also want to try with TCS off. Even though you dont hear or feel the tires breaking loose it can still be working and you not know it, but what I said above is more than likely your problem.

I can remember back in 99 Motor Trend compared the 99 Mustang GT against a 99 Z28. They ran them at the drag strip. Both cars were dead even for about 100 feet and then the stang disappeared from the picture. LS1 is a high rever.

same here for a very brief moment, also doesnt help when you're tires really hook, but i've found that launching using a break-torquing method helps to shorten that time in general...

I assume you have a A4 (automatic 4-speed)?

A stall will fix that

Mine's a turd down low too. With Nittos it wont even break loose from a dead stop. It doesn't start moving until about 4,500 revs in first gear.

Thanks for the replies guys. This is my seventh LS1 and just seems like something is wrong. I had a '00 WS6 'vert with the same setup (drag radials, 150hp NOS, plugs wires etc.) and would leave out great (1.60 60ft's, 11.38@121) and it was a convertible! This thing feels almost like it wont go if you just stomp it(even tried spraying it early to help but it still felt like a brick till it moved a few feet. I know it will dead hook on motor with the drag radials, but this thing feels like will dead hook on mini spares!

could it be his torque management? I know mines fell on its face a few time from a dead punch because of it.....tcs and everything disabled and it just wouldnt get into its powerband like it should.....seemed like it took forever unless i took my foot off the gas and leaned into it again.....by then that little mitsu lancer was gone.

Someone else mention that. Would that cause it to just fall on its face from a dead stop? My other Ls1' never had that prob.(they where all '00 and up though) does the '98-'99 have a known problem for this? Thanks-

Depending on mods and (lack of) tune you could
be having a bad tip-in ping that throws big knock
retard on you, squashing spark for a while. It need
not be audible ping to hit you. Also sitting, you may
have bad IAT run-up and pull even more spark
while also adding to the ping tendency (hot air,
hot coolant) depending on how fans are set and
how effective the cold air induction path is, at
keeping the hot air out.

Diagnostic logging is where it's at, the car really
wants to tell you but you have to ask and listen.

I had a problem with a 96 bird falling on its face from the ignition wires needed replaced but I have a 98 t/a now and have not had that problem try using your stock stall to your advantage or get a higher stall but I would try your wires first

Just drove down the road and tried to stall the car up a little, nothing. If I hold the brake and stomp it it just sits there with a high idle! WTF! I let off the brake and it eases away like I'm on a Sunday drive THEN picks up like it should a coupla seconds later

Something is definetly wrong with your car. My car slams you back in the seat and melts the tires if you give it 1/2 throttle. Full throttle it will just spin the tires into oblivion if I leave it in 1 and don't allow it to shift.

All of my other ls1's have ran great. Just gotta figure out whats wrong. Probably gonna hook up my buddies Atap tommorrow and see whats going on. Whats so strange is the car runs like a bat outta hell from a roll...guess i can look at the bright side , no improper start tickets!

Sounds almost like your TCS isn't turning itself off.

It was the torque converter. I put in a 2500 stall and it cured the problem. I had the old converter cut opened and checked and it the spragg was broken. Thanks again guys.

I have the same problem with mine, only with me it only shows up on a sticky dragstrip. On the street, if I mash the throttle right to the floor off the line the car leaps forward with authority, with the tires just slightly spinning enough to get the engine into the powerband. But at the track the tires just grab, and the engine bogs slightly. It's very frustrating for me. I'm hoping that my switch to Pirelli P Zeros on the back will mean slightly less grip at the strip compared to the stock runflats, and therefore it won't bog anymore.

Humm, never had that problem with my 02. If I floored it from a dead stop, it would get sideways.

Well there you go, good diagnostics. Some folks would've just told you the car was a turd and that was the way it is, good you found what the mechanical issue was.
