Whats the difference in the 1998 corvette LS1 and the 98 LS1 they put in the firebird and camaro? how does it rate with 45 more HP?
And how much know how would it take to swap a 98 vette engine into a 99 TA? What problems would you for for after a swap like that?

There is no difference in the motors, the vettes came with dual exhaust that gave it a little more power, and less weight than an f-body. Also the vette didnt have EGR on the intake, and I belive the fuel system is a little different.
I would say no to putting a 98 motor in anything. Hell I advise against even buying a pre 99 car. Some of the 98 motors had bad oil pumps that failed, and the heads/valvecover arrangment was changed in 99 to a better design.

So would A 98 vette LS1, just wire and bold right up exactly like the original engine?
I know its not that simple, Im just trying to gage how difficult the work would be.

The 98s aren't as bad as some people let on...
True, 97 & 98 lS1 have the perimter bolt heads/valve covers
98s have an actual functional temp gauge, unlike the rest of the years.
Yes, 98s oil pumps are prone to failure, but most people replace them anyways while doing a cam swap.
I don't think piston slap was an issue with the 98, it started in 99
The 98s wiring to the PCM is different than the later years.(that's why it is difficult to find programmers for 98s)
With nitrous, I've hit over 500 HP on my 98, without any issues (stock bottom end)
I love my 98, of course I've already changed the oil pump & have gone with LS6 heads (center bolt valve covers), but it ran great even before those mods.

I know i've posted this before, n00bs need to read the stickies.
There's some very minor differences, but in the end, they make the same power.
You said it to begin with, an LS1 is an LS1

I am gettin kind of sick of all this BS about 98s being so bad, my 98 doesnt burn oil, my friends 99 does, my 98 doesnt have piston slap, my friends 99 does, I get good oil pressure there is nothing wrong with my oil pump, and like someone else said my temperature gauge works, my buddies 99s doesnt. My 98 runs better than when I bought it and she just turned 87k today

I second that. No piston slap on my car, good oil pressure (though not as high as the later models). Does burning oil and piston slap have much to do with the 98 oil pump? I doubt it. But it sure as hell says they're fine compared to later years.
This is just another internet rumor which has caught so much momentum that everyone believes it.

I think its a general "myth" which can sometimes be true. Ive always heard "never buy the first year any car was redisigned" Because all the bugs have yet to be worked out.
But its not like the engine isn't extensivley tested, and I think you could give common problems for most year can't you?

I have a 2000 and whats so bad about piston slap. Its just that the pistons are cold. As the motor gets up to temp and the pistons grow, than its all over. This is not just an LS1 charactoristic. Its possible with anything running hypernectic pistons. Everyones not saying that 97-98 LS1's are bad, just that if you do a build up on one, change the oil pump to a LS6 like everyone does to all years of the LS1's.
