best upgrades.....
1. subframe connectors
2. 12 bolt rear end ( very important if it's a m6 and you're going to add more power)
3. lid
4. LT headers, ORY, catback ( or an electric cutout )
5. heads and cam or some sort of forced induction and their supporting mods.
6. new clutch for a manual / stall converter for auto should be thrown in there somewhere. like 3-5. and a better intake if you don't already have the ls6 intake on you're 2000.
that should give you some REALLY good power man and should be in you're price range, if you are a ls1 newb. research ALL of you're mods first and what brand etc. b/c that is alot of money to make mistakes with, you can do it right the first time and have quite a bit left over again i can't stress enough research, ask questions, and read stickies.
What kind of car do you want in the end. The stripped down dragster look, a stock looking peppy daily driver, A really good handling autoX car, the show car look, the complete overkill blower out of the hood, a sleeper?

i'm in the same situation but no immediate money to spend. i'm holding off on everything so that i can go turbo more specifically an sts style. i bought a lid and thats it for now because i don't want to get exhaust end parts if i do go sts style.
i got sfc's, panhard bar, and shock tower brace. haven't installed yet. and a torque converter.
my order would be
1. lid ($89) or skip lid till funds for turbo are there
2. Suspension Parts stb,sfc,shocks,springs, whatever else($500-1000)
3. torque converter ($700-900 installed)
4.TURBO and supporting mods-60lb injectors, fuel pump, fuel rails, TUNE ($5k-8k)
5. Rock On Transmission ($1k-2k) when stock a4 goes out
6. New rear end when the stock goes out ($1k-2k)
Should be good for about a 430 rwhp daily around $10k in mods
i'm doing this to keep the stock bottom end and get a good and hopefully reliable daily that's cali smog legal. you will have to read more because you can easily get 430 hp for much less in mods but that depends on what you feel fit. the above is just what i would do if i had $10k available for my Camaro today. Read the forum cause i've been doing it for months. DAILY!!!

If I had 10 grand, I would love to do a supercharger, along with the neccesities for that kind of power.

You already got a budget so now what are u going to use your car for????? drag car/street/daily driver........so plan accordinally, my camaro is going to be a weekend car, that will see alot of street action and not 2 much track so my goal is about 400rwhp...... i want to keep it real drivable thats the goal i set now you gotta know what mods your going to have and how will they affect your goal, and dont forget supporting mods power is nothing if its killing you, talk to local guys in your town ask them about shops/installlations etc........good luck and may the force of Zora be with you
BTW - this is for an auto, so if yours is manual you'll want a shifter and 4.10 gears instead of a stall and 3.73 gears.

If your long term goals are FI or NOS or simply an N/A setup then you can taylor it in any direction. For me this is just a pretty serious N/A setup but my no means the ultimate.
If I wanted more I'd probably add a 100 wet shot of NOS on top and then maybe look at a Procharger supercharger, but by that stage you will probably need a new built tranny (if auto) and a built forged engine.
P.S. Remember I have not included any labour in this.
