I've heard that a good amount of engine wear and tear occurs when its cold because of the second or so lack of oil pressure and mostly due to the fact that the different materials (aluminum, steel, etc.) expand at different rates, which means the clearances can be way off (a few thou) for several secs. Every thousandth counts, especially in performance motor (ls1). Needless to say, I let the ss sit for a good min then take it real easy for a few more.

I think the carbon build up excuse to not warm up is bs because the first rip to 5k (when its warm of course) blows any crap right out. fuel injected motors are clean compared to carb'd motors anyway

I let mine warm up until at least 100 degrees. I don't know why, I just always have. My dad always beat into my head when I had my first car. So it just stuck with me..

i have heard nasty rumors of aftermarket valve springs breaking if they arent warmed up before you rev the hell out of them. i am just careful not to beat on mine till the temps get to normal operating range.

It has more to do with the ramp rate on the cam, but the springs can cause a problem. some metals are more brittle when cold. If you heat them up first (before pulling high RPM), they can expand and contract faster without breaking. Like everybody says, keep the rpm below about 2500 until it gets warm, then you're good.

It is a good idea though to allow the cars idle to come down a bit after cold start. 10-15 seconds before putting it in gear and driving away is good for the car, especially if equipped with an automatic transmission.

You wait two minutes that are not required and accomplish virtually nothing beyond wasting gas. Why would he want to do that?

Turn it on, let the idle settle, go, take it easy until it's warmed up. That's all there is to it.

If I let my car warm up before i left then I would be there for half an hour, its a bitch in the winter. I think the previous owner put a 160 degree thermo in there and it takes forever to warm up the that, a real pain when its cold but I just baby it till it eventually gets warm. But yea, i'm glad to have it though since 90% of my temp gauge is never used

whats the long term effect of just jumping in and starting a cold car and taking off right away?.........doesnt that lead to alot of engine wear?

In the winter yes, spring summer no. Long as your in top gear everything is good. 30 seconds is ideal for proper oil pressure.
