driveablity with cams?
I am looking at engines for a transplant into a 77 celica liftback, around 2500 pounds. I really like the lexus v-8 ( i have one i my sc400) 1uzfe, but these ls1 look to put out tremendous power and weigh about the same as the previous stated engine. This car is not going to be designed for drag racing, more for street and touring performance. So my questions: How do "cammed" ls1's run, are they rough at low rpm like old sbc's? How about fuel economy? Cost to complete a cam install (own labor). How reliable are they at high miles? Are there any turbo do it your self info on the net, like where to tap for oil, etc. What kind of hp can you make on stock internals with a turbo set-up on pump-gas only. I know i've seen really high numbers (650rwhp), but i think those might include meth injection or 100 octane fuel. I'm looking for what is reliable at sustained levels. So with such high compression is 7psi about the limit on gas, i'm looking for that level. Anyhow, so many question, but i'm curious.
thanks in advance

what are your goals? 2500 with a car that'll put down 300 at the wheels stock will move. you could get a babyish cam..like a stock 04 zo6 cam and ls6 heads..it'll give you a ncie improvement over stock and be just as driveable as a stock ls1. my car...3400-3500lbs dry add 230 for me and some other random weight..and I get 28ish mpg a tank..mostly highway driving, but lots of full throttle runs.

If you want daily drivability I would go with a hotcam or s 224 TR cam. But even with the stock cam with full bolt ons and a tune you will be looking at 330-360 RWHP which is FLYYIN for a car only weighing 2500 lbs

An LS1 can do smooth daily driver reliablity at 420+ rwhp through a manual.
Read all the stickies you can find and excercise the search button. 350 rwhp with a stock engine is doable, as is 385-400 rwhp with nothing but a cam and 420-450 rwhp with heads/cam.
I daily drive mine with 4,000 stall speed converter, longtubes, no cats, bullet mufflers, 3" duals with X-pipe dumped at hte rear axle and a 237/242 .603/.609 113 camshaft. It drives just fine.

Check the internal engine section for heads/cam information, external engine for bolt-ons, forced induction for blowers/superchargers/turbos and Nitrous for nitrous.
There is a lot of information in this site, go find it. It will keep you busy for hours, even with the insanely stupid and irritating (IMO) search that no longer shows older threads.
You can't safely go over 6 psi on a stock motor, IMO, but I'm no F/I guy.

you ignored my question..what are your goals? if you really want forced induction...you could go the turbo route, but it would be a better idea to go with a 370 iron block for boost..the ls1 can take it, but the tuning HAS TO BE PERFECT! and depending on the turbo 5-8 psi is good stock with a intercooler.
