Personally I think this is a myth.
BAD
Clutch are supposedly not that great even though mine has lasted 112k miles.
LS1 Intake/ LS6's on all `01 up cars
Blocks / Thinner sleeves
Oil Pumps / sometimes fail although I never had a problem
Exhaust manifolds / more restrictive
GOOD
28 lb Injectors /vs 26 on `99-`00 Cars
Steel gas Tank / don't know if it's good or bad
Borg & Warner T56, Later cars had Tremac's /Dont know if it's good or bad

I've even heard that `98's are lighter than later F-bodies But I doubt that.
I got 112K on mine and all I've ever replaced is the Waterpump and bent pushrods from a missed shift. Like I said the Clutch is original I ordered the Car New and picked it up with 4 miles on it.
It's not beat on but not babied either.

My point is don't shy away from `98's Because there are some great deals on them out there.

The computer in different on 97 and 98 ls1's. The valve covers are different also, the bolts are on the out side of the valve cover's as opposed to 99 and up are in the center. I have two ls1's and I don’t have any complaints about either one I wouldn’t say one is better then the other well when they were stock anyway. Also the fuel sending unit on the 98 is a one only year. That’s about all that I have noticed.

There's a sticky on the differences between years. If you still have questions search, still have questions or search doesn't work, then post a thread.
