Default Stall question

Ive used the search button, and havent been able to find anything. What exactly is a "stall?" and what are the differences between like the 3200,3400,4200, ect.? I see many people on here have them for the autos... Also, where is a good place to check out prices/purchase?
Thanks,
Chris

it is a stall converter. it is used for auto transmissions to have your car launch at a higher rpm. the 3200 etc is the approximate rpm level your car will launch at when you floor it.

Bad advice!! A higher stall converter should be the first major modification for an automatic LS1 car. Some have seen as much as .5 sec ET reductions with the addition of a stall and sticky tires alone, not to mention the sheer fun factor of driving a stalled LS1.

Original poster: Sounds like you need to do some research about how stalls work. Read this, should give you a better understanding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_converter
Once you get a good understanding of how it works, head to the automatic trans section and do some searches on questions you have....they've probably been answered several times before. If you still can't find the info you're looking for, post up a question in that section and members will be happy to help!!

For A DD, I would not get a BIG stall.. ~3K stall I think would be fine.

Bigger isn't always better for a DD but its all subjective. I really like my 3600 stall but some people would say its too big while others think its tiny. As for overheating...get a tranny cooler.

I dropped a consistent 7 tenths with my 3600 stall and Nittos and I'm just a minor bolt-on car. Best bang for the buck IMO.

for a stock-bolton-mild or medium cam car a 3200-3600 is a good rpm range to look at and a str of 2.1 seems to be most common.... as for overheating a trans cooler will solve that problem.....

do your research befor u buy a stall and dont be scared to ask questions.....

when it comes to stalls there are tons of things u need to take into consideration

what rpm range?
str (stall to torque ratio)?
are u gonna be spraying?
what gears are u running?
do u plan on a "big" cam?
is it a DD?
what brand? some stall much higher then they are rated at

if u call up fuddle, yank , or vig they will talk to you and help u decide the best stall for your particular application

i see alot of people on here wishing they would have went with a bigger stall (i dont think ive heard anybody complain of a 3600 being to big)

It doesn't matter when you get one as long as it is before you get a cam. It is THE SINGLE BEST MOD for an auto, period.

btw, I don't believe that you used the search button...I have personally seen all the threads about stalls in the last couple of months and the amount is well into double digits, but whatever man...
