The 10 bolt and 12 bolt are basically 2 different sizes of GM differentials. They are identified by the amount of bolts that hold the rear cover of the differential on. Despite having only 2 more bolts though, the 12 bolt rear is considerably larger, heavier, and able to hold more power than the 10 bolt rear.

All 4th gen F-bodies came with 10 bolt rears, and they are prone to blowing up under certain conditions. Basically a combination of sticky tires (slicks), higher Horsepower output than stock, and a manual transmission with a high performance clutch can spell death for a stock 10 bolt at the track.

Hope that answers your question.

Yeah, 10 bolts are crap. Im just going to add to the fact, that one of my friends has a cammed 02 SS, and he has broken 4 of them. He finally wised up and got a Dana S60.

they can be welded and several of the parts replaced with hardened ones....but overall there a major failing product....most people however...or the ones that know there stuff will go with a ford 9'....very strong and parts are easily accessable for them...you can get one for around 2k dollars
