Default Thinking of 383!!!

Im still new to this whole 383 stuff so hears my question, im thinking of stroking my engine to a 383, and now im hearing of some people that have bored out there engine to a 383 and i was like What the hell are you talking about. i now that there no replasement for displacement, but wats the difference between a stroket 383 and a bored out 383? and wich one would give me the best 1/4 mile times? Thanks!!!!

Well bore is the size of the cylinder and stroke is how far the piston travels, you probably wouldn't be able to spin the stroked motor as high as the bored. Ideally do both and get MORE displacement

don't waste your money. Figure out what you want to do with the car.

a. forged stock c.i. bottom end is extremely cheap, money saved can make it faster than the 383.

b. a forged 402/408 from a sponser is probably cheaper than the 383 kit is installed.

do some research before you make a decison, the stock crank is incredibly strong, no point in throwing it away for no reason.

I agree I'd go forged 346 anyday over a 383 and I'd go 402/408 before a 383 as well

I just did a 383 myself. The most common way to make the displacement is to add a 4.00 stroker crank to the stock block. The 383 option is cheaper than a 402 due to the covers and harnesses not needed for the 383. Now a 408 if you can handle the extra weight would be a good choice and just about the same price as the 383. The best thing about the 383 is the increased torque. I managed a 50 rwtq increase over my heads and cam 346 setup, and it was across the board from 3000 to 6500 rpms. If you want to see my combo go check out the dyno section.

I suppose you are speaking about a 402ci LS2, right? Then yes, LS2 covers are needed. But, you can still make an iron block 402ci too, and use LS1 covers.

A stroked 383 is a ls1 motor with a different crankshaft, a 4" crankshaft, installed to achieve 383 ci. It gets it's displacement from "stroke", or extention of the crankshaft.

A Bored 383 has it's piston walls enlarged, to create a larger diameter "bore". This doesn't change the stroke or the crankshaft. But with a larger bore, you can also achieve 383 ci.

A 383 bored vs stroked motor is a hige debate. You'll get all kinds of opinions on which is faster. Generally speaking an all bore motor can be revved higher, due to less piston speed, but in our applications, we are not revving past 6500 or so rpm anyway, so I think it makes little difference. Both are going to be much stronger due to the extra displacement.
