God that is a broad question...

LT1, Iron block, Iron or Aluminum heads, 350ci, 1992-1997 came in C4 vetts, f-bodys, b-bodys.

LT4, the "hot" version of the LT1, came in Grand-sport vetts.

LS1, Aluminum block and heads, 346ci, 1997-2004, came in C5 vetts and f-bodys.

LS6, "hot" version of LS1, came in C5 Z06 vetts.

LS2, Aluminum block and heads, 36ci, 2004-? came in 04 GTO's, C6 vetts.

LS7, Aluminum block and heads, 427ci, 2006-? Comes in C6 Z06 vetts.

LS3, Aluminum block and heads, 327ci, 2005-? Comes in FWD W-bodys.

LQ4/LQ9 Iron block, ? Heads, 327/364ci, Basically an Iron block LS1 for trucks.

Thats about all the info I'm willing to type out... try a search for more specific answers.

Thanks GTO... I was way to lazy to include the HP ratings, and I did a shitty job proofing

carbed LG4 w/ 180 horses I guess could count as a notable recent v8. Though it was carbed instead of modern fuel injection. In that case, that opens the door to alot of other combos, but I doubt the originating poster cares.

for 8kish

try www.autotrader.com that way you can try to deal w/ a private seller. plus i'm sure theres plenty to buy here.

you'll want to look at the 98+ f-bodies for those power levels. 400hp at the crank can be done w/ a cam, and long tubes, nothing big. 400 at the wheels, would take, cam, long tubes, a tune, and "243" casting heads, or other better than stock heads, even ported stockers.

as for the old big blocks
LS-4, Iron Block, Iron Heads, 454ci, 1973-1974, 270-275hp
LS-5, Iron Block, Iron Heads, 454ci, 1970-1973, 270-390hp
LS-6, Iron Block, Iron Heads, 454ci, 1970-1971, 425-450hp
LS-7, Iron Block, Iron Heads, 454ci, 1970?? , 470-600hp

*Note* I think from the LT1 on the engines became reverse flow (coolant went into the head first, then the block) unlike the older gen small block

The main one you need to be concerned with is ls1, that's the engine that came with 98-02 firebirds and camaros. This is the engine that started this web site. It's probably the most popular version, as far as aftermarket modifications, although all of them can be modified. For the purpose of purchasing a camarao or firebird, you only need to be concerned with ls1. I wouldn't even bother with lt1, which was the version before the ls1. If you are in the market for a camaro or firebird, definately get one with the ls1.
