I just had a cam kit put in with hardened pushrods. I've got a similiar noise but not quite so loud that comes and goes. I think I'd be leaning toward lifters. My noise isn't bothering me too bad because new heads and lifters are on the way.

Yeah, that sounds like crap. It is to loud for piston slap. Can you look around your headers for black soot? If you dont see anything I would say it has something to do with the valve train. Good luck with getting it fixed
I would get it checked out fast so you dont

That sounds a little louder than a usual normal lifter tick. Sounds like something got damaged in the valve train. I would check the whole valve train out ASAP. But I have a feeling you have a bent pushrod. IF it is, then that is a easy fix.

Then put it back together and check lifter preload. Try to put the pushrod back in the way it came out, with the same rocker because they had been worn together.

That's a loud knock. My engine ticks like a **** but not like that.It could be the way the recorder picked up the noise but I would start by doing the above before pulling the heads.

A buddy of mine bent a pushrod in his WS6 and it sounded almost exactly like that. Hopefully thats what it is. Wouldn't a compress lifter throw something off more so then just the tapping sound?

Hell, I'm no mechanic but I'd start by pulling the valve covers and checking the rockers and p-rods before pulling the heads. If it all checks out than your that much closer to popping the heads off anyway.
My engine ticks. tick tick tick, drives me nuts but you have a definate knock by the sound of the recording (which may be misleading). I would not be driving much until you found the source. jmo

Hey man I had a very similar sound going on in my 99 ss. Before you tear the motor down check to see if your oil pump is shot. It seriously sounds like your lifters are ticking because they have no oil on them. I was auto crossing in my car and after some laps i guess it starved it of oil and started making that same noise. Anyways I changed my oil pump to one of the newer ones and the noise stopped right away. Hopefully you didn't do too much damage. If its not the pump it may be a spun bearing

doubt its rod bearings like someone said because they are usually RPM dependent. Now it could be Main bearings but you would get rod knock with that also.
What everyone has said about the heads/valve train is the right way to go and it looks as if you have gone a good route with taking it to a mechanic that has experience.

If you spun a bearing then you would have a major loss in oil pressure. If it is a lifter, then get the new Caddy lifters instead of the comp lifters. Or if you are tight on money, just get some LS7 lifters. But I still think it's a pushrod, or a failed rocker arm.
