How well do you know the guy? Sounds like he was trying to make a little extra off the top. On a good note though glad it wasnt anything major. Let me know if those new lifters quiet the 'train down any, I'm thinking of adding some when I do my heads.

sounds like a pushrod that has too much gap between it and the lifter...could be worn and needs a tune up, or could be a bent pushrod, maybe a valve not seating properly...it could be any number of problems but its definitely in the valvetrain

Yeah man sounds like he was trying to make a little off the top. I think some shops don't realize that there are places such as LS1tech that you can go to get realistic prices for things, not to mention the sponsor deals, and hell even evilbay. Good luck with it though man.

You can buy new ls7 lifters for 135.00 from Texas Speed. There are a few different types of comp lifters that very in price from $200-$400. Not sure if this guy is messing with you ore not. But if you want to do it your self use the head swap on ls1howto it should give you what you need. Glad to see it was nothing to major.

You might aslo want them to check out the valve that hit the piston. SCPC has the LS7 lifters I think for $100. Be sure to use the MLS head gaskets. Don't let him stick in some crap head gaskets. The GM head gaskets are just fine. Also, I hope he knows to replace the head bolts with new ones. They are a one time use bolt.

Its always safe from what I have read to use new bolts on the heads, much like it is to use a new crank bolt when doing a cam change or pulley change. The head swap walkthrough was what i was refering to on ls1howto. That should give you everything you need to get the lifters out and change your pushrods. New gaskets and new bolts are a very good idea.

Glad you figured it out, but if you think about it the guy was charging you extra bc he has taken apart your motor pretty much and was gunna put it back together.. IMO he was just charging the normal $70/hr for labor.
I figured it would be a lifter.. Good thing it wasn't a bearing bc that would have sucked..

My car had the EXACT same problem this weekend..
i got it towed back to the crib, and drove it extremely slow to the shop the next day
mechanic is replacing all the lifters, i think one of the valves are bad also, he wants to replace everything but has to check with the warranty people first. pushrod was bent too. i think hes gonna check if anything was cracked.
Car has 107k miles... im thinkin of sellin it, just way too many problems lately
