There is a resistor pellet in the ignition key that the value of gets read. If the resistance value doesn't match what it is supposed to be, it will disable the car from starting for SEVERAL (I forget the actual time) minutes. Try cleaning the resistor contacts on your key with a pencil erasure (gently), wait 15 minutes or so, and try it again. It is a theft deterent system - they figure that a thief won't wait around trying different resistance value keys until he stumbles on the correct one (while waiting XX minutes between each one).

The wires leading out of the steering column for the VATS are pretty small guage - maybe one of them has broken, only occasionally making contact. It is possible to do away completely with all that VATS nonsence. You measure the resistance of the pellet on the original key, and purchase a resistor of the same value. You then cut and splice the resistor into the wiring (a similar type of procedure you'd need to do if you were adding a remote start to your car). I don't have a Service Manual to tell you which two wires - you might be able to Google it.

no, it wont work. Either have vats tuned out, or do the simple resistor mod like mentioned above. do a search for vats, and you will come up with the thread. Its pretty simple man, did it to my TA also. VATS is JUNK!

Not sure if heat has any factor in this problem, but all last summer it would not start. After I turn the key a few times and stomp on the clutch it would start. Now since its getting hot out again I'm having the same problem, but worse this summer! All winter I had absolutley No problems starting.

I think the resitor mod is a great idea, thanks!

That same thing happened in my old Z, GM looked at it one day when it got towed there one day and said its probably the wires in the column as they have a tendency to break or have a bad contact after a while.

You can have the car tuned and ask them to turn off VATS. It will no longer be a concern. I always turn it off on anything I tune unless told not to; and it'll cause issues with certain remote start setups especially if the shop doing them has no clue.
