42k miles, can i switch to synthetic oil NOW?
I have no clue what kind of oil the previous owner of my 95 Formula used but I doubt the poor bastard ever fed it synthetic. So, assuming that he did NOT, is it safe to start pouring in Mobil 1 in it or is it going to burn off too much crap that's accumulated and the engine will "blow up?" Should I just keep it on non-synthetic 5w-30?

LT1's are fine with regular oil, we run it in the LT1 in my mom's Caprice. That being said, i'm the third owner of my car. I bought it with 46909 miles. The guy before me was running semi-syn and I switched to GC Synthetic. Has almost 60k now and no problems for me, so i'd say if you want to switch, go for it.

There should be no issue with switching over at this point. You could always run some engine flush through it first if you are concerned about sludge buildup, then go over to the synthetic.
