I work at a gm dealer and this is what we use (part of gm) to look up service history claims, build, delivery date =(start of warr. coverage) so on. I belive it stands for "Vehicle Inquiry System" or something along those lines.

as a tech we use this to look for outstanding recalls (since service writers don't do there job ) and look up RPO codes so we know what options a car has.

I just called SLP today to get the SLP # for my SS. They just needed the last 8 digits of the vin to give me the #. However they want 59.00 to get a birth certificate that will tell you all the SLP option installedon the car.
