cam/heads in cali?
sup all, so i'm sure there's a fair amount of you out there who share my frustration at the california smog regulations but i just have a few questions so bear with me; i realize that a set of short tube headers would most likely allow me to pass the visual test, however im wondering if it's even worth the money?? would i be better off taking my chances with slp longtubes and possibly having to uninstall them around smog time?? also what kind of cam do you guys think i could get away with? thanks in advance for any advice!

if its for your 99, shorties(carb legal) will give you only a few horses. 00-02 manifolds flow almost the same as shorties. as far as heads and cam, i've heard of guys running 224 cams I believe on a 114 lsa were able to just skate by smog with proper tuning. as far as heads changing that equation, I don't know.

IF you did headers do LT's and find a guy that will "overlook" the visual. There are a couple out in Anahiem and Santa Ana. As far as h/c I dont know but if your going to do it you can get cats and you will pass the sniffer or have about $200 to spend on passing the car.

From what i recall, the AFR205 heads and TR224 114 with full exhaust should pass you with a solid tune. I was going to go that route myself but i think i'm going to go with the sleeper style and pick up the Thunder Racing Cheatr H/C package and a nitrous set-up. The Cheatr H/C uses stock manifolds, exhaust, and cats but puts out pretty high numbers (around 400whp). Peep their site if you want more info, and a dyno tune sheet.

Good luck, man.

Thanks patna, that package had caught my eye already, seems emission friendly and also looks like ur gettin a pretty good bang for ur buck (around $2500 for the package) but i'd like to get input from somebody else who's maybe gone this way?? worth the money? passes emissions?

If you want a cam that passes smog i would look into a 224 cam with a 114 lsa. People have went bigger but it is risky unless you find someone to hook u up. Look at the cam packages offered by thunder racing and texas speed and performance.
Where are you from in the bay?

Newtech in Hayward will take care of you; Nick can get you around the 400 rwhp mark on heads/cam/headers with tuning. Back when I was NA, I passed smog with LTs, 5.3 L heads, and 224/224/114 0.588 cam. As stated above, it's not terribly hard to find a place that won't even notice the LTs. Ask for a "pre-test": in other words, pay them to test your car and only report it to DMV if it passes.

I have the Z06 heads, cam, and LS6 intake, Shorty headers, SLP UDP, Loudmouth, tune, 9" rear, and built up tranny. No problems with smog. Hope that helps you out.
Stay legal and go with legal parts...that way, you never have to worry about the smog thing. You may find someone that may overlook it but if a cop pulls you over and checks things out, the ticket is expensive!! They are looking out for cars like ours after all the street racing crap (which killed people) in our area.

Highly doubt it...you'd be better off switching back to stock every two years (or go with the 224 like what everyone has been saying). Orrrrrrrr, pull out the wad of $$$ and let it do the passing....

They do both the visual (cats are SUPPOSE to be in the STOCK locations by law). and the sniffer... i'm not sure if the sniffer requirements are the same as PA though? no idea
