Recently I came across a 1998 z28 Camaro which I am thinking about purchasing. The price was relatively cheap ($3,900) and it only has 64,000 miles. It just needs some work...the only problem is that the motor the guy has in it, is said to be a crate motor because originally he blew the stock ls1 he had in it. I've driven the car, it drives good, just has a hesitation that I think a basic tuneup can take care of. The problem is figuring out the motor which the car has.. on the heads, there is a casting number "706" which I know are 5.3L heads. The coil packs are different then what the stock ls1 has, they have a "19005218" number on it. The car has a P303 code(misfire)...pretty sure I can take care of that... the car looks ok, just needs some work.

Any thoughts on the heads or overall car?

 

check the block for casting marks, sounds like it may have a 5.3 crate motor in it
