Damn. With 100% city driving, and LOTS of WOT pulls, general hard driving, and plenty of idle time I can still get 16-17mpg out of my '98 A4 w/2.73s car.

I would expect to see 25+ with pure highway driving.

I have the same car. I haven't calculated it ut that sounds about where my gas mileage is. I get 24 on the highway, but then again i cruise at 75-80 so that affects it some. I don't know about the city but its not good.

BTW, my A4 has 3.23 rear (optional performance rear gear), which contributes to why my MPG is lower than other A4.

Lately I've been getting 12.5-14.5mpg 90% city.

I can get about 1.25 mile out of half a tank. Quarter mile at a time! 15-17 mpg here.

You have an M6.

The best you'll ever get with the A4 (and 2.73 gears) will be mid to high 20s on the highway, with easy driving.

The only reason is that some people don't maintain their car. I KNOW you maintain your car meticulously. So do I. New fuel filter, I keep up on all fluid and filter changes, new spark plugs and wires...I constantly replace parts, and I get 22 mpg with mixed highway and city driving, and that's with headers and 3.42's. Headers and 3.42's, untuned aside from the speedo, HELPED me. I got 19 mpg the first tank because the car was running a little rough immediately after the headers, but once it smoothed out, all my mods have helped my fuel economy.

For the people on here who are getting below 20 mpg with stock internals - seafoam your car, change your sparkplugs and wires, change your fuel filter, air filter, switch to synthetic oil, flush your coolant and change your trans fluid (if you have an automatic) and switch your differential fluid to synthetic - I GUARANTEE you'll see a huge boost in mpg. If you still don't, your O2 sensors or coil packs may be deteriorating.

I highlighted fuel filter because a lot of people never change their fuel filter, ever. If you guys have 80,000+ miles...don't be surprised if you're on the STOCK AC Delco fuel filter. Fuel filters should be changed every 20,000 miles or less.

your car will get bad MPG while the seafoam is in it. Wait till you flush it all out then see if you have any increase.

When I'm easy on the car (limited WOT, mixed city & highway driving), I've seen 21-23mpg with the 2.73s. I've never done 100% highway between fillups, but I'm certain I could get 25+ if I did. Actually I wouldn't be surprised to see something like 27-28 if I did 100% highway, no WOT action, and limited my speed to about 65mph.

I'm considering it.

I've done all that at least twice (my car has 56k mi).

O2 sensors and cats were replaced under emissions warranty a while back (due to premature failures). The engine runs strong with no extra noise so I doubt there is anything wrong with the coil packs.

^^^Sounds like the problem may lie in the plugs/wires, then.

every fill-up doesnt go to the exact same spot. you might have put in .2 gallons more last time. bringing your MPG down to 25 with just that little 1/5th of a gallon difference. you have to go distances to find out the mpg

Good. That was the seafoam tank. I'm just under 3/4 of a tank now, and it seems to be a little bit better. I'll be thrilled with 20 mpg mixed.

My 98 gets about 275 miles per tank when I'm easy on it. A4 w/ 3.23s and 140K miles. Think it was about 20.5 mpg with about 70/30 Hwy/Cty

Seafoam is a solvent that you suck into your engine, let it soak, and then drive it to clean out the dissolved sludge. You can also add it to your gas tank to clean the fuel system. My local NAPA sells it.

Many people swear by it, others note that there are other products that work more slowly but that might do a much better job of cleaning out your engine, like Auto-RX. That's what I have in my crankcase at the moment.

Quick Reply: Pre-seafoam fuel economy was 17.8 mpg
