Default skip shift & rpms as well

I know it's been discussed over & over, but - I HAAATE the damn skip shift thing.

I do have a curiousity, someone on here mentioned it's a computer aided gear selection to improve economy, but I dont quite understand, when it happens, it locks me out of 2nd, then when it will finally go in... it's lugging the hell outa the car, or you have to shift back into 1st, then the car's jerking around making it look like ya can't drive a stick, or... the eprson behind you almost rear ends you...

I am wondering that this damn thing is actually dangerous, what if you were pulling onto a busy road and the damn thing decided to come on!?!?!?!

ok, so that also brings me to a question of sorts... - what rpms do y'all shift at under "normal" everyday daily driver conditions, like no hot-rodding, just normal driving?????? - I am not used to the f-bodys, and the engine being "in the cab" so to speak with me, so when I hear the noise of the engine revving, to like 2500rpm, it sounds like 7,500 to me, just cause of the engine noise, that keeps me shifting every day around 2,000. and never ever over 3,000.
Especially also, because the car when letting out the clutch has a slight tick kinda noise, and a slight rattle at 2500 under acceleration... (apparently ls1's are just kinda "tick-ey" anyway???????)

just wondering what some others think...

You can remove the "skip shift" by purchasing a skip shift eliminator. See sponsor -->
During normal driving, I shift around 2-2.5k

Well, when I had an M6, I just kinda shifted when it felt like it was time. Didnt really ever look at the tach.

If say you were pulling onto a busy road, and you were half way into it to get your speed up, the skip shift wont come on. When you have some decent acceleration going on, it doesnt try to force the shift. But its not an expensive or complicated fix buddy....

For skip shift to be active, I beleieve three things need to happen. Throttle less than 30%, speed between like 14 and 19 mph, and coolant temp above 170.

$20 and its gone...I dont think its a huge deal it all when I had it. You just have to know when to move and when not to move.I would get over the rpm limit and just throw it into second and call it a day.

the skip shift is there for economy. GM needed it to get the Fbody out of the "gas guzzler" bracket i think.

even when it engages...the car should have enough pull in 4th to continue to accelerate. but yes it does bog the engine down.

by simply reving the car a bit more you'll get out of the "range" of the skip shift and it will shift fine.

as for normal shifting points. i would say i hold 1st and 2nd longer than i need to, maybe 2500 for for 1-2 and 2-3...but then i tend to skip shift and go right to 5th after that.
and sometimes i'll just do 1-2-4 since alot of my driving is 35mph, which is 4ths good spot.

That was the first mod I did because it was driving me nuts. My natural tendency is to shift at fairly low RPMs when I'm just tooling around. I think I usually shift around 2200 and I was hitting that skip shift fairly often.

Like the last response said, I still skip gears sometimes but it's at my choosing and not the computer's. Sometimes I will let it rev a little higher and do a 1-3-5 pattern. That 1-4 thing sucks though. My sister drove my car once and she went 1-2-5. She was proud of herself until I told her that she missed 2 gears, lol.

i seen some skip shift eliminators on ebay are they worth it? Also when i do a shift from 1st to 2nd the car feels so wierd, i dont no if i have a lil habbit of having my foot on the gas for a lil while when i push the clutch in. Or could it be pushing in the clutch too fast? car feels like it falls on its face, but my buddy has the same thing happen in his mustang so its not the car. its just from 1st too 2nd, like i take it to 2,300rpm and then hit the clutch shift into second, thats why i like to shift into second sooner, it doesnt feel like it falls on its face. maybe its cuz my skip shift is gay too! lol. I try to beat it and i think it makes me hessitate cuz i no its coming. its the only shift i have problems with, this was this summer, cars away now. i plan getting the skip shift elim soon though. thanks.

Just remove it youself with a 2200 ohm 1/2 watt resistor like I did. There is a detaliled write-up on it at installuniversity.com. It took me no more than 10 min to do this (including finding a jack and lifting the car

Yeah, I read about the resistors trick, but I am sort of a guy who likes things to look professional. Do those eliminators on ebay work just as well as any other?

I hate the cags system. I only see it when there is a car in front of me and I can't pull away from a light like I want. I have been procrastinating geting an eliminator for too long. I usally shift around 3500 when pulling out onto the high way. Around town it's usuall around 2500. But, I don't usually look at the tach, I go by feel. I've been driving a manual since i got my liscence so it's kind of second nature to me.

Pitbull14218: Your problem may be you are not using the accelerator enough to rev match. I can squeel the tires when I drop the clutch shifting into second. And that is when I ony shif at 3000. I don't do it all the time, just when I sift hard.

I take it to about 3K in each gear. With gears it can be a pain in the *** to be shifting at 2K every time. I like to be above 2K RPM's at all times though so I can accelerate cleanly in case I need to.

Well i mean it feels stange even before it put into second, as soon as i go to shift, i let off the gas hit the clutch in, but i think im either letting the gas pedal go too fast or hitting the clutch in too fast because it feels like the front falls on its face. like i dont no if its just because i am trying to beat the eliminator and i let off the gas fast and try to shift fast into 2nd or what. thanks.
