Default get a stall first?

i want a cam, but i see everybody posting to get a stall first.
which will make me faster on the 1/4 mile the cam or stall ?
sooner or later i will have both, but i want the one that will make me fast on strip now. i will be getting a 3200 stall or a 228R cam tuned which will give me better 1/4 mile time??

Depends on how big the stall is and the cam size. Give those details and I am sure someone will be able to help you.

a stall will def. give you better times how ever slower MPH. cam dependding on applications, it will give you power def. your preference , i would go with power me personally. with a cam , you will dif. need a stall, with that 224 cam duration. i have 231.237 duration comp cam i need a 3500 stall

i want a cam first, but if a stall will get me better 1/4 time than the 228 cam i will do a stall.
I plan to get a 3200 stall or TSP 228R cam/tuned.
say i run a best 13.0 flat right now, which of those mentioned above will get me closer to 12sec. down the strip

I have gone as fast as 11.7 with a 4000 stall with stock heads, stock cam, stock suspension and alot of tuning. That was on a cold day. I went 12.7 before the stall. Mind you this is on drag radials with a sweet tune. I have a 3200 stall now and it still runs high 11's low 12's. It personal preferance man. I have had guys go cam only and get 3-4 tenths, then seen them go cam only and get 7-8 tenths. Same goes for a stall. Its all about where you want to put the money. A atll done right is going to be $800-$1400 installed and with a trans cooler. Cam done right can range from $1300-2000 depending on what parts you use ofcourse with both. Remember with a cam you have ot have retainers, springs, pushrods, all the goodies to support the newly found power. I had a fuddleracing 4000 stall, cost me $400 to the door, then a $50 tranny cooler. I went cheap the first time around. Then you have to remember that with a stall you will heat up the trans, so you MUST install a trans cooler!! I learned this after $3000 worth of three transmissions. Now i have $240 in transcooler and braded lines, along with a 1000hp trans with a PI3200 boost converter.

Hope i didnt get off topic, but just giving you an idea on what it will cost.

Get the stall first or at the same time as the cam...

If you get the cam first then you're car will lose all it's nuts and it'll feel like it wouldn't pull a greased string out of a cats ***.. True for A4's, M6's less so I believe..

Your choice in a getting a stall first is more correct than you realize. The size of the stall will matter even more. Consider carefully your driving habbits and expectations. If at all possible, drive or ride in someones car who has one.

Since the 1/4 is in your mix, I would suggest, at a minimum, a 3600 (cam or no cam). The Yank SS series converts are really nice and have a tendancy to drive like they are less of a stall than they are. Although I don't DD mine, I would not be affraid to drive a SS4000. I know several guys who've gone 12.2X with a 3600 and full exhaust (full weight).

Just remember, it's always cheaper if you get it right the first time.

Good luck!

You need a bigger stall to take full advantage of the cam anyway so to me it's a nobrainer. Definately get the stall first. If you get a 3500-3800 stall, transmission cooler and drag radials then you can expect a .5-.7 drop in ET from where you are at right now on street tires. You'll probably pick up a mph in trap as well.

I went stall first and by looking at my sig you can probably guess that I have no regrets

im in the same boat as you. you deff. should do the stall first! you'll drop more time in the quarter with a stall than with a cam. you can do build your engine all you want but you take off and 60' will still be the same or barely improve. you have to get a good launch! but you just cant go out and get any stall and any cam. you have to match the 2 so you can always be in the power band and get the full advantage of your car.

yeah a vig 3200 should be fine with that cam. remember vigilante under rates there stalls, so a 3200 is really close to a 3600 stall.

Yes, all very good advice. Definitely go with the stall first. I went with a Fuddle 4000, cost me 400 plus $50 for a cooler, installed it myself and will knock close to a second off your 1/4. And when I ran that converter, my only other supporting mods was LT's/exhaust. Wait for the cam later on, and my advice is go bigger than a 3200, but im not gonna talk you out of it either.

Don't get a 3000 stall. You WILL regret it as it's too small especially for the cam you plan on in the future. I have the TCI 3500 and I love it but to be honest there are a lot of people who have had problems with them standing the test of time.

I think you'll be the happiest with a Yank SS3600.

http://www.converter.cc/converters/street/GM/1/main.htm

It's $675 but well worth the money.

damn i been doing most of my research on a cam. I need to do some research on this stall you guys are talking about. if i go with a higher stall does this mean its more harmful to my tranny? i will get the cooler for sure. This car is my d/d, so i hope these higher stalls will be ok.

A 3200-3600 stall is perfect for a dd. Just get a tranny cooler and you'll be good.

Keep in mind though you will lose 1-3 mpg if you do a lot of city driving. On the freeway it will be the same as before.

have fun with a 3500 stall with good tires, and do a cam a tranny upgrade later on..the extra 50+ hp with a cam will prob start tearing up the tranny. i run the TCI super street fighter and works great for me its tuned soft and light right now almost to much power for it

I got a PT4000, but I found someone selling it (brand new) for the same $$ as the SS3600 so I got it to see what a 4000+ would be like. I came from a Fuddle 3400 2.1 so I knew what I was in for.

I love how my vigilante 3600 drives. (I also drive around with no carpet or insulation or front swaybar, for reference) It dropped .5 et on street tires. It badly needs drag radials or slicks now, it's a tire burning beast if you whack it even half throttle.
