Do some snooping, look at the maf, throttle body, exhaust. Any signs of tampering? Like mentioned above, could have had stock parts put back. The rearend would be too much trouble to change back.
Jack it up, put a mark on the driveshaft and the tires. Turn the shaft. If it goes 3 1/4 times for 1 revolution of the tires, 3:23. If it turns 3 3/4 times, 3:73. It'll be close enough you'll know.

Yeah, i'm leaning towards the tach being about 200 rpm's off... we hooked the laptop up to it and compared my tune with a stock '98 A4 tune and everything in terms of the rear end gearing, tire size, etc came out identical and the speedo is completely accurate so it's gotta have 3.23's and a funky tach
finally got some pics! yes, it is filthy... it'll get a full detail when it's not 25 degrees out

It's a '98 Z28.. 86k miles and stock down to the paper air filter.
It's an automatic and it's at 2000 rpm's at 60mph so I think I might have 3.73's... does that sound about right? The car is supposed to have 3.23's
What kind of gas mileage should I expect with the automatic and those gears?
And what kind of routine maintenance and tune up kinda stuff should I do? I have to assume that nothing was done

Something that can save your life! when is raining do not accelerate hard, because the car will loose control! i wish somebody had told me this before i did it! before my trans am i drove a chevy lumina i floored it on rain and it didnt loose control, so i assume the trans am wouldt either, and i almost hit the wall of a highway luckily i controled it, and saved the car and my life
. By the way is this normal or is something wrong with my car. is an automatic convertible!

To the OP, those things are hard to keep stock. Beware.........it bites the wallet hard.
And one more thing guys, the stock tacks in these cars are almost always off a few hundred RPMs.

Stop tossing around the idea of having 3.73's stock, because you don't.

lol. dont think for a second that u have 3.73's if u are only at 2000 RPM at 60 MPH. i have 3.23's and perfect right on 2000 RPM at 60 MPH (auto4). come on man 3.73's would be like 2300. anyways thats a nice car and pewter like mine...time to do add some style to it so it dont look so plain!!!

That has certainly not been my experience. Actually, I can sit there and watch my tach along with a real-time display from HPTuners showing the current RPMs as taken from the OBDII port, and they are identical. Now, the tach needle itself is slow, and won't keep up in first gear (and is why I have a shift light), but to say that they are off all the time is inaccurate.

I actually think under certain situation I might get BETTER mileage. A big part of my commute, I'm going 40mph in OD, which is lugging the motor at 1,100 rpm.
