Default New to the LS1 game...Couple of questions...

So i picked up my first 1998 formula firechicken today. I have had quick cars before, but they were all fwd. Now I have a couple questions, the car has 3.42 gears put it, what exactly are those better for? I know the car used to have the stock 2.73 or whatever, not really too knoweledgable in that department. Also are pace setter headers any good? Any help would be appreciated, this is actually the first American car I have ever bought, and after about two years of looking for one, I found one in good condition that I couldnt turn down.

quick FWD? LIAR!!!!!!

I'm guessing by stock gears being 2.73's you have an A4 (automatic). So 3.42's are much better. Pacesetter longtubes are the best bang for the buck header from what I've seen. For more info on gearing, read this https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axles/376207-want-know-effect-changing-gear-ratios-look-here-first.html

The lower the gear the better for the acceleration but worse gas mileage on highway. there are a lot of variables for the best gears for your setup and use. Maybe this will help you understand it...

a lower gear (higher number, like 4.10's or 3.73's) is like a lower gear on a bike. is it easier to take off in 3rd gear or is it easier to take off in 10th gear. of corse 10th will get you to a higher speed but it will take a long time to get there. if it was a short distance race, like drag racing, the guy on the bike in 3rd gear would win. the guy in 10th gear would bog down and take forever to get a good speed haha

The way I see it, 2.73s in an Fbody are worthless. The only thing they're good for is getting better gas mileage, but let's face it, if you bought the car for better gas mileage, you bought the wrong car.............plus your priorities are screwed up.

Yea it makes me laugh at people whining about 19-20 mpgs on a 300+ hp car. ****, I could barely get 17 mpgs mixed driving in my stang and it was a stick and my A4 would annilate it.....
