Default 1LE Lighter?

I know it has the beefed up factory sway bars, shocks, bushings and torque arm, but is the car actually lighter to the point to make a difference?

If you're in a race frame of mind then, yes, every little bit will help. With the A/C deleted, no power motors and some other things to help lighten the car up will help, but will it matter to most street enthusiasts? Probably not. To a drag racer, perhaps yes.

A stripped no option Fbody is lighter than a 1LE car by 7 pounds (according to GM).

The problem is, how many people actually have stripped down, no option, Z28s and Formulas? Not many. On the other hand, almost all the 1LEs you see have very few to no additional options. Mine had the rear defroster deleted, no rear floormats, no power accessories, etc.

So while the 1LE is a smidgen heavier, in real life almost all of them are lighter since most Z28 and Formula owners get options like power accessories, T tops, leather, CD players, etc.

So here's a question...

I have a '98 Formula hardtop A4, with a cloth interior, the only option is has are the power windows, locks & mirrors.

How much lighter is this car than, say for example, a A4 Trans Am (i.e. leather, ground effects, spoiler, t-tops)?

First you'll need to weight your car, either damn near empty of gas or damn full to make the comparison easiest. You can do this at truck stops with scales or fertilizer/feed stores.

Then, try and find a friend with a car optioned how your looking for, or try to find the info on this board Also, check to see how much gas they had, as there can easily be over 100 lbs difference just in gas.

I did try to find the info on this board, and didn't find it, that's why I asked. I figured that was a little easier than going out and weighing the car... it's not like there's a lot of feed stores and truck stops in the middle of Seattle.

I'm sure there's gotta be someone who has weighed similar cars before.

The 1LE from 98 up came with AC standard. I had a 98 1LE and I did get the rear floor mats even though I wasn't supposed to be able to. I also got the worthless CD changer with the cassette player radio. I now have a 2000 Z28 with all the options including T tops. Both cars are T56 cars. The 1LE may not be that much lighter than a well optioned car, but it sure handled much better than the optioned car due to a stiffer suspension and better components.

I think a low option z will be lighter because it will have lighter wheels and swaybars.

Zeke my 98 Formula A4/ hardtop/ cloth seats/ 2.73 was less than <3400 lbs stock.

A TA would be almost 3500 lbs.

Crazyquik, et. al.

My '99 is almost a 100% total stripper and it is not a 1LE. It has single CD Monsoon and the power steering cooler. Otherwise it has NADA as far as options. Ie: hardtop, no rear defrost, power nothing, cloth seats, no ASR, no foglights, etc. etc.

The car is probably 100-120 pounds lighter than fully loaded examples. When I first drove it, it actually felt lighter than others.

I love the factory strippers

I think mine was down to 3190 with no gas. Had stock wheels on it, no back seat or spare or jack, no cats, lighter torque converter (A4 1LE ) headers are lighter, no front sway bar and ET Streets (lighter than steel belted radials).

Yup! Strippers rule!

I find that most of them lead pretty dysfunctional lives, however. Whoops, wrong kind, back to cars...

I just love the idea of a car with no excess bullshit on it. Better handling, little better braking, little quicker, and less electric/electronic crap that will eventually break and drive you crazy when you try to fix it.
