Default 6.0L / Aluminum LS1 comparison questions

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a complete LS1 to do a transplant. After doing some price checking, I noticed the 1999+ 6.0L engines are substantially ($1000-$2000) cheaper to buy then the aluminum LS1. Is the 6.0L the same engine as the LS1 except for the intake and engine accessories and what the block is made out of? What other differences are there? Could you swap the 6.0L intake for an LS1/6 intake, and are the fuel rails and injectors the same? Are the heads the same? Could you take an aftermarket LS1 wiring harness and install it on the 6.0L with swapping out the intake and other parts that may be necessary? How much of a weight difference is there between the 2 engines? Is it possible to take LS1 performance parts (cam, stroker kit, heads, etc) and install them into the 6.0L? Are the engine accessory mounting holes the same?

Please forgive me if some of these questions have been answered before, but I haven't figured out how to effectively search yet. Thank you in advance for all of your time.

Thanks again,

Kevin C

well, there's about 75-80 LBs extra weight involved but everything else it pretty much swappable. ;D same externally identical block, similar heads, intake, mains, diffrent bore size, similar crank, ect.. ect.. but basically the same aftermarket parts that work on LS1 stuff, work on the 6.0 block. as far as acessories go, there is one bolt hole on the alternator mounting position that is not tapped on the iron block, and i left that bolt out on mine. so far it's been fine spinning it to 7k+.

hope that helps, ;D

Thanks for the response. Since I'm an American and liters really don't mean much to me, how many cubic inches is the 6 liter? Keep the ideas coming!

Thanks again,

Kevin

There are four head versions for the truck. #706 4.8 liter cast iron with small valves, 9.5 to 1 comp, #873 6.0 liter cast iron with ls1 size valves,9.5/1 #317 6.0 liter aluminum same as cast, #035 6.0 liter virtually the same as ls6 heads. IMO buy a ls1 used the best engine for the dollar.

Thanks for the responses so far. I didn't know there were different style heads between them. What would the compression be with the #035 heads? So if the heads and block are basically the same, would it be safe to assume the intake and exhaust manifold bolt patterns be the same as on the LS1? Would there be any conflict between the LS1/6 intake and accessories? Would you have to swap out the fuel rails and injectors also?

Thanks again,

Kevin

If you wait a little longer, you'll be able to get an aluminum block from GM, that is rumored to be in production for the new Vette.

I'm doing the opposite of what I think that you're doing. I'm putting an LS1 into a truck, and everything will bolt up except for the one accessory bolt as mentioned.

What is this going into?
