engine/trans storage
For something like building a kit car they will be sitting for a pretty long time. I will have them sitting on a pallet mostly and have the motor on a rotating stand for building. But as far as keeping the internals happy and healthy?
Usually people loosen the rockers so no valve springs will be compressed. Especially important with high lift solid cams. Keeps moisture out of the combustion chambers too. Don't let anything touch cardboard.
In my own garage I've started wrapping stuff in clear plastic shipping wrap for storage. Seems to work ok so far.
I didn't think of relieving tension on the springs, thanks. Didn't know about cardboard either. It will be sitting in a garage w/o climate control as I work on it over time.
A vinegar bath will decalcify and an acetone or gasoline rinse will wash it out?
