Default piston slap

I got a 98 Z that when it warms up its got a pretty loud ticking coming from what it sounds like under the car.. i know that the ls1 is famous for some piston slap but i thought that went away afters warmed up?? mine just seems to hang around.. ALL the time.. its got lt's ory a lid and a tune.. gonna put an ls6 intake on shortly.. sadly its got 143,000 on it but dont get me wrong it runs low low 13's all day on some street tires (havent ran it with d/r's yet).. runs like a champ.. but it just annoys me whenever i come to a stop light and im next to a car or wall and i can hear the ticking ricochet off of it..

Sounds like you might have some lifter sadness, I had the same deal on my old F o r m y. Look into it when you pull that intake off.

Can't say for sure without hearing it in person, but at 143k, it could be a rod bearing. Could also be an exhaust leak.

i checked everywhere for a leak.. i got exhaust straps instead of u-bolts and i replaced the crap *** paper gaskets that pacesetter gave me and got the metal gaskets.. a rod bearing probably would cause a significant drop in power and i got mine dynod not too long ago and it pushed a little over 347hp and 358ft lbs torque.. plus it dont burn oil enough for rob bearing..

Does it do it right off the bat when it's cold? How loud is it?

it does it right off the bat but seems to get a little louder when it warms up.. my oil pressure gauge is reading great.. it does increase when you accelerate.. not sure what that could mean.. my bro thinks it isn't that bad but i guess its loud to me cuz its drives me up a wall

then it migh be injector noise which is normal. try to feel the injectors with the engine running.

if not, diffenetly lifters!, install LS2/LS7 ones. They are very good.

injectors are alright.. i can hear them and the ticking over the injector tap.. i'll try and check what's up with the lifters when i pull the intake.. i mean it does have 143k so im eventually gonna do the motor but right now its my daily driver and dont really have the money to do everything the way i want..

143k for these motors is not a big deal

You have a problem, you can solve it without rebuilding the whole motor. Hopefully.

I agree that 143k isn't a big deal, unless it's been beaten hard and not maintained.

Did this start before or after the dyno run? A spun bearing doesn't always cause a drop in oil pressure.

i guess it's always been there.. putting the headers on made it a little more noticeable somehow.. and trust me ive had the car on the lift quite a few times for leaks and cant find any where i hear it coming from..

uh i have no clue what seafoaming is but after the recent post i saw about it i can say im too comfortable with that idea lol

(the thread)

So i seafoamed my car today

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, my car has near 54K miles... I have followed a brilliant write up on how to sea foam on this website. I was on the final step where i had to put a 1/2 a can of sea foam in my brake booster and spray some deep creep in my TB. Everything went good, car smoked a shitload blah blah... But the bad thing is my car lost performance significantly... before i did 0-60 runs in 5 secs flat... now i could swear it takes 6.5-7 secs, (by the time it reaches 50, before i would be in 70 mark already) even my brother noticed... WHAT THE ****!!!!!!!

seafoam is just an additive/cleaner you can add to the engine oil to clean up all the crud in your engine, you can get it at NAPA, checkers, o'rilley and so fourth...anyway, his car has other problems as well...seafoam really is excellent for simple things like finding out if a certain noise is lifter noise or not...ive used it before and its worked great..but its your car and its up to you! good luck! keep us posted!
