OK, stupid question here, newbie, so please be kind.

[History] I traded an 86 Z28 for the Y2K Trans Am. I knew the Z like the back of my hand. Rebuilt the Quadrajunk carb, did a bunch of repairs/mods, but this 4th gen is a diff animal.

Just finishing up major renovation to recently bought home, so now I have time to play with the new Fbody.

[Here comes the dumb question] I recently changed the hood over to a WS.6 style and it came with a new air box. Ok, that stuff is in/on. What the hell is the big black jobbie behind the box, some type of air resonator or what. Do I need another aftermarket lid to do this mod or can I use what I have? [ok, I said one dumb ?, this is two.

Thanks for any help, I'm lost, can you tell?

That ugly square thing behind your lid is the air silencer.

If you mean the "Fernco" mod, I don't see why you couldn't do that with a stock intake setup??

BTW, Welcome

I used to have an '86 Firebird, so I know what you're going through

Thanks for the Welcome and an answer.

Air silencer, huh, why does the air have to be silent? So, it's like a muffler for the incoming air...

Almost funny story, the GF has a soccer mom van [prob, cause she has two small kids and they play soccer] and is having probs with it stalling out. So, being the good BF, I went out and got a Chilton book. Never worked on a Gran Voyager before. I was figuring on changing out the air and fuel filter. [This will show I am slow on the uptake]

Reading the book and looking at the pics, I found the piece I needed to remove to access the air filter. It was stuck, so I started prying up at the edges. It started to break, so WTF, I beat it with a hammer and found out that I was kicking the **** out of her resonator.

Ok, so $90 and many appologies from me it still stalls out. I don't want to mess up the Trans. I made a comment to her that at least it was her car and not mine that I destroyed. Funny, she didn't find that amusing.

Thanks again. I noticed the [now I know] silencer was missing from all the pics I have seen.

It's gonna be a nice weekend here, so I think I have a project in mind!!!
