Default Couple of quick ???'s

First off, I have been using Royal Purple in my car for the last 10,000 miles (basically the time I have owned my car). I was thinking about switching oils and trying something new to maybe see which oil is best for my LS1. I have read on here that the German Castrol is a very highly recommended oil on this forum. My question is this: For a DD, is GC 0W-30 an ok weight to run in my car here in Georgia?
It is my understanding that the "0" means it flows well in cold weather, and that the "30" is the actual viscosity and weight of the oil. Am I correct in this info? Are there any reasons why I would not want to use this oil in my car??

My second question is for all the M6 guys with the stock 3.42 gears. Do you all shift into 6th gear if you are on the highway at 60 mph? I tried it tonight and the rpm's were about 1400 rpm. Is this too low of rpm to just cruise along? Obviously, I down shifted into 5th when I needed to pass somebody. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the long post, I just wanted some good advice. Thanks in advance guys.

Daniel

I've always used Mobil 1 Syn 5w30. 1400rpm is fine for cruising on the highway.

I used to use Mobil 1 in my 99 Firebird. But like I said, I am wanting to try a couple of diffent oils out, then send them to Blackstone labs to get a definite answer on which produces best results on my LS1.

So do you see any problems with running 0W-30 here in Southern Georgia???

I have used Mobile 1(when I first got the car) Penzoil platnium(reformulated, does not leave the soapy residue like the old penzoil), GC 0w30, and have roayl purple in there at the moment. So far, I like the GC best of all, good oil pressure and did not burn a drop! Also, it looked as clean as the day I put it in when I drained it. The RP seems to be a little dirty after 2k miles, but other than that seems to be as good as the GC.

In my opion, they are all 4 great oils, and it is really just in what you prefere. Most people don't like the Penzoil from what it uste to do. Mobile one in my opinion is over rated, do research. Along with the Royal Purple almost breaking me just for oil, I think it might be overated as well. GC is my choice next oil change and probably as long as I own the car. I am moving to Wyoming in a few months and this should be a good oil up there as well.

I don't know much other than my personal experience. So don't take my word on everything, just my 2 cents!

Just to add...GC 0w30 is getting harder and harder for some people to find, even though I have never had a problem getting it. You can get it from sponsors here on the site, but if that ever runs out I will probably use the Royal Purple. Also, has anyone used the Mobile 1 0w30????

Thanks for the response, that is what I was looking for. Our Autozone here in town stocks the stuff, so I will try the GC 0W-30 for awhile to see how it goes.

It has been the same for me also, using Royal Purple. I seems to get dirty quickly, and I am constanly checking my oil every couple of days because the motor likes to burn a very little bit during a full night of spirited driving.

Yeah, thats exactly what I found with Royal Purple, and I was also wondering where the hell all the purlpe die went! Kinda creepy, but other than that a good oil, better than others. You shouldn't be disapointed with GC, and does not burn as much as this RP seems too. I'm not really sure why sertain oils burn more than others, but they seem too.

Im no oil expert but I have searched a lot about it.
GC - Very highly recommended. People love this stuff on here.
M1 - Also very liked oil on this forum. I have read tho that the new formula they use nowaday isnt as good as it once was.
RP - I have read a lot of bad things about this oil, but yet people use this stuff, so idk what to think.
Pennzoil platinum - Havnt read much bout this but this seems like the new to the block of really good oils. I wouldnt hesitate to try it.

In the end... IMO, as long as u change ur oil every 3k it really doesnt matter which one you use. I think it's when you wanna go 6k+ miles on your oil is where it might matter.

I use Castrol Syntec 0w30 (GC). Has been in my car for almost 5k miles... was planning to get 6k miles out of it, but its about time to store the baby for the winter, so imma b changing oil soon.

When I first got my 99 T/A I used Mobil 1 5W-30 and it burned a little after 4000 miles and was a lot darker after the 4000 miles also. So I switched when I found the GC 0W-30 and have been using that for the last three years. After 5,000 miles it didn't burn any oil, the oil pressure gauge reads higher and it is still the nice clear gold color it was when it was put in 5000 miles ago. So I will always be using the GC
