Efficiency and application are the keys to converter selection.

On a stock bottom end H/C/N20 car a 4000 converter is right on the money.

A 4400 converter in that same application will 60" worse and trap slower on an identical application on the bottle.

You do understand that stall speed and efficiency are not dirrectly related. we have a 5500stall thats a very efficient convertor.....

Correct, choosing correct stall speed depends various factors such as your application, desired RPM range, etc. Ideally, for maximum acceleration the stall speed of the torque converter should match the peak torque rpm of the engine

Effiecency lies in the angle of the fins of the conveter itself, keeping in mind that the pump assembly and the turbine assembly spin at different speeds, every torque converter has a different rate of slippage between the two. The amount of slippage is what determines efficiency. Postive angle on the fins of the converter generally means a very efficent converter.

school me for a second more..

when you are talking the slippage or the angles.. does that have to do with STR?

just trying to learn something new!

I have the vig 3600 and I have issues pushing through on a 100 shot. I would go with a Vig 3200 or a dedicated nitrous converter.

The vig 3600 is defiantly a 4k stall, its great on motor but on the spray it gives a little up

I just went to the track yesterday with my newly stalled and freshened Vig. Went from a "4000" to a "3600". The 4k flashed 4900 on motor (logged). I new that when I spray it, that'd be too much. Didn't use the spray yesterday, but went 11.0's all day long. Best 60 was a 1.55. Honestly, I'd like a higher stall for just motor. It was soft out of the hole all day, but I'm optimistic it'll do much better on the 200.

Wow I figured you N2O guys would be running higher stalls than that. I guess it makes sense though. When you get into 400+ C.I. and big duration cams that make peak power at 7500rpm, then you get into high stall converters with guys that are using nitrous too.

FWIW FTI FTW!

Well **** is my stall to big for my set up? My mods are in my sig.

I just went from a Fuddle 3800 to a Vigilante Multi-Disc 4000 Stall.

My track pass in my sig is with the fuddle with the stock transmission.

I have a built 4l60e now too.

I think you should talk to several of the converter companies and see what they think is the best converter for your car. Everyone has different set ups, from car weight to power level, transmissions, rpm shift points, etc. It all plays a role in what size converter you need. I personally have a FTI after using several other converters, this one is the best I have used. The car is slow on motor but is perfect on the bottle, just like I expect it to run.

this thread started like 2 years ago, but Ill add a little insight, if you think some joe blows "4000" converter right off the shelf for some "400" hp car is gonna work the best, many of you are very mistaken. Take the time call a couple of the good companies, there are more than what is advertised on tech and you will be happy. FTI, Neal Chance, PTC, Protorque, etc. etc. to just name a couple.

I've been pretty torn myself between converter choices. To keep my current vig 3600 single disk converter and up my shot to a 200 hit, or keep the 150 shot and have my converter restalled to a 4000 and possibly multiple disk added....or up the converter and the shot. I just dont know which one would have the biggest results.
