Default Nitrous Race Checklist

Racing N/A I never thought I needed a checklist, nitrous has changed my thinking. I totally botched my first nitrous pass so I have prepared a detailed checklist. Everyone's setup is different - I record data and keep logs. But there are similaraties. Here is my list. I would appreciate suggestions for improvement with emphasis on safety.

Nitrous Race Checklist (Everything I've Forgotten at least Once)

Staging Lane

1 Fuel Level, Oil Level
2 Tire Pressure, Bottle Pressure
3 Hood down and Latched
4 Ignition Key in Shirt pocket.
5 Belt, Helmet
6 Doors closed, Windows up
7 Start Laptop (Login)
8 Verify E-brake on
9 Verify Nitrous Disabled, Start Engine
10 Start Data-Logger program
11 AFR-Power Switch on
12 Fuel-Pressure-Sensor Power on
13 Verify RPM-Window-Switch in “Run” mode (not “Config” mode)
14 Line Moving – Data-Logger Connected, Running
15 Gloves
16 Next in Line - Verify Nitrous Disabled, Bottle Valve open
17 First in Line – Restart Data-Log, Secure Laptop
18 Verify E-brake fully off

Starting Line

1 Water Box - Verify Nitrous Disabled, Track-guys Clear
2 Second Gear Burnout
3 First Gear
4 Arm Nitrous
5 Purge
6 Pre-Stage, Remember: Ignore Opponent - Race the Track
7 Stage (carefully)
8 4000 rpm, Ready to Go
9 Go – Nail those Shifts! (Don’t think “Don’t Miss Shifts”)

Shutdown

1 Through the Lights – Lift, Neutral
2 Stop the Car – (you’re going fast)
3 Disarm Nitrous
4 Stopped – E-brake on
5 Stop Data-Logger – Save the data
6 Bottle Valve closed
7 E-brake off, go chat with girl in booth

Emergency - Nitrous Backfire

1 Stop car motion
2 Stop fuel flow (turn ignition all the way off).
3 Close Bottle Valve
4 Fight fire with extinguisher until track guys Firefighters show up

You have alot of **** going on. Relax. Most of the stuff on your lis can be done in the pits before you even get to the lanes. You ever hear of the acronym KISS?

I have merged the pits and staging lanes in my list because that is more or less how things work at Sears Point (Infineon) on Wednesday nites. But I agree, I do have at lot going on - hence the need for a checklist. Also, I do get distracted and excited. I will add "Relax" Thanks.

I log data using HPTuners Scanner. The HPTuners hardware can log data stand-alone but I prefer using the laptop. I run with the lid closed and the laptop strapped down. That's what I mean by "Secure Laptop"

If you have a data logger, why even mess with the lap top till you get back to the pits.. One less thing to worry about.

Good point. I've been collecting data this way for three seasons and old habits die hard. On the other hand, the laptop method does have advantages. My checklist probably makes it seem like data logging is more trouble than it really is.

Not trying to stirr up anything but what advantages?

Good luck.

Why not just use the HP tuners box to log. It's the same thing but takes a second to push the button. I hardly ever keep my laptop in the car anymore. If it starts acting up or what not/or to record a race just push the botton

Data collection is not a problem - I’ve finished fooling around with my weird stuff before the waterbox. I wonder when others open and close the bottle valve? When do you arm and disarm nitrous?

My bottles are open before I even get into the car. When I'm heating them. System gets armed right after burnout. I close the bottle when I get back to the pit.

Dont forget an emergency Checklist (Most important IMHO)...

Nitrous Backfire

Stop car motion.
Secure fuel flow (turn ignition all the way off).
Close Bottle (this is why my opener is wired direct to battery vice "Switched")
Fight fire with extinguisher until track guys Firefighters show up

Dear Beer, Thanks very much for the important addition to my list. This is the reason I started the thread. LS1Tech comes through again.
