Default DP seperate fuel system

Thinking about doing the DP route and i'm wondering how a seperate fuel system would work I would probably move my battery so i have a spot for the fuel cell and to plumb the hose to the inlet for fuel but how does the fuel pump work? is it wired to a 12v and always on or what?

Edit: leaning towards NOS Sportsman what else would i need?

The fuel pump is wired to a relay. The relay uses a switch to turn it on and off. That's pretty much it. You use a fuel pressure regulator to control your fuel pressure after that. Pretty simple.

Like Derty said. Most folks use a low pressure setup for the standalone system also.

Can you go a little more in detail like what relay and what it's wired to?

Yup, you just use a standard 30 Amp Bosch style relay. They come SPST and SPDT (single pole, double throw and single throw). That would be that a single pole is more like an on off connection. A double throw would have two terminals that one is constant 12v when the switch is off and it toggles to another terminal when the switch is on.

The relay looks like this:

You basically have a 12v wire that goes into a toggle switch of some kind, located in the car. From the connect side of the switch you wire it into the relay and put the other side of that connection to the ground. You then put 12v into the other terminal on the relay. When the relay is on, it toggles over and sends 12v to the pump. The other wire on the pump goes to ground.

The first diagram and the diagrams on page 13 of this PDF illustrate this pretty well. http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/500-001.pdf

OK i understand that but if that's wired seperatly then i would flip that switch before i activate the kit but wouldn't the pump just run and run or is that ok

Edit: If i didn't go with the seperate fuel system what else would I need to get the sportsman system to work?

That's perfectly fine. You wire the fuel and nitrous solenoids to activate together on a WOT switch. Let the fuel pump just run.

if you get a regular 6psi electronic fuel pump, once its got 6psi or so it'll just pump back into itself so no need for return lines or regulator's, if not summitt has pleanty of fuel pressure regulators, I have a mallory, not completely happy with it though, any way you go you should still get an electronic fuel pressure guage just to make sure you've got psi before turning on the juice, if your tanks empty or there's a leak or somethings not right the guage wont read normal psi

Yeah i was planning on getting the FP gauge do you think that I should use a fp cutoff switch or just monitor the pressure?

Why are people using low pressure rather than high pressure on stand alone systems? There has to be a reason? If the car is set up to run at 58 psi, why would it be better to run it a 6-8psi for the fuel solenoid????? Does it somehow effect the combustion process?

people run a low psi alternitave gas tank strictly for the nitrous fuel side, you run low psi for 3 reasons, 1 its all you need, 2 its more inexpensive, and 3 less chance of high psi leak, also I think the fuel solenoids were designed for around 6-9psi so they work great with only that much psi, somebody correct me if I'm wrong

edit: the 58psi fuel system is that high because its going through electronic injectors, and you need the high psi for consistancy and flow from such a small opening

Low pressure systems offer you the opportunity to control your fuel system better. They don't draw off the fuel supplying the rails, which tend to have mixed results. They allow you to lean and richen the mixture easily. You can still do it with your stock type fuel system, just takes a bit more work.

As far as a pump goes, it really depends on the kit you're installing. Personally I use a Holley Black, which is a 140GPH pump. Some people use a Magna-Flow which flows closer to 300GPH. With both of those pumps you use a regulator to control your flowing fuel pressure. NX Now uses a higher PSI then NOS, mine is around 9.5psi. You can choose to set your pump up "dead headed" where it simply comes out of the pump, into the regulator and straight into the solenoid. Or you can put in a tiny return line back to the tank and restrict that line with a small .024 (or even smaller yet) nitrous jet. All it is is a way for air to purge out of the line back to the tank. You put the jet in there to prevent a lot of fuel from going back to the tank instead of the solenoid.
