Nitrous/RMVB TH400 guys...
How do you go about reading your plugs after a pass...
I asked the question in the auto trans section about shutting the car off in 3rd after you cross the line and was told not to do so..
Do you guys normally cost to the turn off with the engine running then shut it off and in doing so wouldnt that effect the reading on the plugs...

There's something special they have to do to the trans to make it ok to do that (shift into neutral). I don't have the monies for fancy transmissions, so I have no idea what it is.
I just kill it in 3rd.
People have done it without whatever modification it is that keeps the overrun clutches from engaging for a long time and still never hurt anything though.

i would thing a manual valve body would be fine because your skipping everything and going to n, i could be wrong tho. but my first 400 is still up and running in another car and he does the same as i did, and its been like 6 years or 7.

Depending on the trans it's usually 2nd that dosnt have the banding to keep it from over spinning. So third should be fine. But don't take my word as gospel I'm also too scared to shut it down
I would never ever throw it into neutral after talking to several transmission builders it spins way too high and could cause it to come apart. (cant think of the correct lingo) haha. Although I know many people that do it. Not for me.
I slow the car down to around 40 or so get it into neutral and shut it off. Yes that isnt the perfect way to get it done, but we can still get a good read on them.

Thru the traps, leave it in 3rd, kill the key but obviously leave the key in the access mode so you can steer. Personally I would not shift it to neutral, maybe things have changed but in my Hughs Th400 rmvb I do not shift to neutral. Also on the down shift I just roll up to the stop light and as the motor start to bog a little I then gear it to 2nd then 1st. my .02
Yes, I have too do alot of tuning on the street (mainly back country roads) and this is what I do each time. The main reason to kill it at the stripe is wot timing is totally different than timing at idle (via coasting).
i've been told by more than one trans builder that th400 with mvb is not to be downshifted at any signifigant speed. i was ruining 34 element sprags and drums driving mine on the street and downshifting from 3 to 2 to rip on it on the highway, and downshifting and letting it coast in 2nd and first (at speed).
for such a strong trans, they are apparently easy to **** up if used wrong.

And as far as the down shift, you can do it if you are careful - you have to come on the gas very easy and you will feel it catch... then you can go WOT... used to do it all the time to those 6 speed guys who thought I couldn't down shift when playing on the street.
