Can anybody tell me if the bottle has to lay down, somewhat. Or can it be stood up, mostly?

I think it depends on what type of pick-up tube you have inside the bottle. Some are really short, so you can mount the bottle upside down... others are angled and long, so you have to lay the bottle with the back lower than the front.

 

How can I tell which pickup tube i have? i have a NX MAF kit.

I'd bet it is the long variety that angles towards the bottom corner.
