Backfiring on N2O?
Hey Carl,
I haven't squeezed my SS that much...YET But I have run my El Camino on the spray for quite some time. You can get backfires from to much timing pulled out. The unspent gases ignite in the exhaust. I have seen peppered plugs from to much timing being taken out, try adjusting how much you are taking out. What size shot and how much are you taking out. Also how much timing on the motor are you running? I have been wanting to ask you how you like your new timing tuner? How much of a difference can you feel on the motor with the added timing in it? Also if you have a lot of timing out of it and the A/F set on the rich side, I feel you will have backfire problems. No biggy, you just need to do a little fine tuning.
Anyway hopefully you get that thing running good I am interested in seeing how it goes
Let me know how it goes.
Glenn

Thanks Glenn. Thats what I was thinking. It didnt seem like mechanical backfire, but like you said, just unspent gasses igniting. Im going to try not to take out so much. Right now Im running a 150 wet shot and taking out ~8*s. The reason for 8 is when Im N/A, Im adding 4*s via the TT. I normally run ~25* at WOT on the stock setting and Im adding 4* more to make it ~29-30*s on stock programming. Im adding 3*s base (below 3000 RPMs for quicker take offs) and 1* at WOT (above 3k) for total of 4*s of added advance. So... I figure taking out 8*s wouldnt be too much to make timing ~22* TA on the spray, BUT.... I dont know if the TT takes the 8*s from the newly adjusted timing or from the stock timing. I need to find out!
Get all that?!
On the motor, it made a suprising difference! You can feel it in the SOTP. The stock computer isnt set up for total performance so it doesnt have full potential timing. Il lovin it for now untill I get it workin perfect on the spray. It pulled harder N/A and on the spray when it worked sorta right.

Is it possible to pull too much timing and make the car backfire while spraying. Ever since I put the timing tuner on and got it to work right, my car seems to lose power and backfires when the gas is on. Its only ran right a couple times in 1 gear shots and it pulls like a wild animal with the timing retarted. I can bypass the TT and it works fine with no backfiring
Im going to experiment later tonight

Sweet, let me know how your tuning goes. I am thinking about getting one myself, but money is tight right now. Yeah, I would say that 8* is to much timing out of it for a 150 shot, but better safe then sorry the first time out
I would say that the TT takes out the amount of timing after the computer, since your nitrous system hooks up to it and it is after the comp. Just a guess from me, but let me know if I am wrong.
I forgot to tell you to do a search in this forum about a guy named Jantzer wanting to squeeeze his car. There is some good info in the post. Some of the people that have put big unit through there cars gave some good info. One guy said to not go lower then 24* timing for anything less then a 225 shot I think. Some of the big unit people use Champion plugs and that is what I use on my El Camino with a 300 shot. I think they said the plug number was S57C which is a cold plug, but they hold up good to big spray.
You will be okay with what you have, I just thought you might like some other opinions. I plan on spraying my car here in the future, so let me know about your success, I plan to follow in the same order.
