When you get Xylene and Toluene, how do you ask for it? I went to a paint/hardware store to look for this Xylene and Toluene stuff. I have never used it but I wanna try it. I ask the guy if they have Xylene and he says there about 7 types. Told him I wasnt sure. So I just left. I did some research and found some type of Xylene. Its called para-Xylene.
I have used Toluene.....it works at preventing knock but it seems to cost hp. The stuff hardly burns so it helps lower the volitility of the gas (makes it harder to burn......won't preignite).
I nolonger use it. I just tune a tad ritch or don't run it so hard when its hot out.

I went to a paint supply store and got a 5 gallon container of xylene... it didn't have a fancy brand name. it was $60 or so I think. Think xylene is about 114-118 octane.. tolulene at 112 or so.. it's nasty stuff. I would put in some type of that marvel oil or some lubricant in with your gass... it's a very dry fuel like alcohol. It doesn't have the lubrication properties of gas. I think I'd only run 25% xylene or tolulene... it worked well on my single turbo supra. It made it a little harder to start though. Also, don't spill it on paint.. it's a solvent meant to dissolve anything.
i also just goto sherwin williams and ask for xylene, cheap too, $20 for 5 gallons. i dump it in at about a 30%mix. i have ran at least 50 gallons of the stuff thru my motor. i have a few experiences to share.
first one, i put a used nx kit on the truck and after only using it a few times the fuel solenoid went bad(stuck closed ), i wasn't using any lubricant so that may have been the problem, it was also a used kit so it could have just been wore out. now i add 4oz of tranny fluid to each gallon of xylene, no problems with my new fuel solonid yet. going to look for that marvel mystery oil, it seems to be recomended more often than tranny fluid.
next, i can run 6psi and see 0 knock with 92
tried 8psi and istantly saw a full 8deg of knock with 92
tried 8psi with 30% xylene and went back to 0 knock
tried 11psi with 30% xylene and saw some initial knock but it was tapering.
i dont have a 9psi pully but i am prety sure i could get away with it when using 30%xylene with 92 and get 0 knock.

You can get it by the individual 1gal containers, or you can get it by 5gal drum. It costs about 10gal, if you buy it in single gal. It costs about 8gal if you get it in 5gal drums. This stuff is highly carcinogenic (cancer causing). I would recommend using an apron/respirator and chemically resistant gloves when putting it into your tank. Find another container to put it in before you pour. If you use those containers they give you will spill sh*t all over the place. You'll also need a good funnel. I was using it alot at one point. You'll need to use it in quantities greater than 4gals per tank full to see any value from it. So a tank of gas will cost about $40, plus premium. I never used any lubricant, and had no problems. The only time you need lubricant is if you run it straight. I did that a couple of times and still had no problem, because Xylene is a high end aromatic hydrocarbon that's already in the gas you buy at the pump. You're just uppin' the anty in concentration (octane). You'll notice slightly better throttle response, but that's about it. I think in the end for me, it was basically a waste of my money. For what it's worth, they also use this stuff in the manufacture of certain illegal drugs. I remember reading that somewhere. That's probably why those guys acted kinda' funny towards me when I'd buy it all the time.

$10/gallon? $8/gallon?, thats nuts might as well just go buy some 100octane and pump it right in your car.
10 gallons of 100 is about $35.00
7 gallons of 92(@ $1.70) + 3 gallons of zylene(@ $8 ) = $35.90
like i said i get my xylene for $4/gallon at sherwin williams, maybe you should try and work tham a little.

I didn't do it at every tankful. The economics just don't justify any benefit gained in the long run. It's fun to do it every now and then, but you are correct that it would be better to use a dedicated race fuel.
