Default What's the limit?? 200? 300?

I am wanting to put put nitrous on my LS1 and leave the stock bottom end. I am planning on swapping the cam, adding headers, new valve springs and maybe some head work but I want to leave the bottom. How much is to much? Could I do a dual stage 100+150... maybe more? Or a progressive 300? One thing is for sure.. I will be doing a wet system.
Thanx

How much risk do you want to put in front of you with this? Is it your daily driver? Are you willing to take the risk of blowing it up? If the answer is no, I don't want to blow it up then 150 or even 175 is pushing it. You could certainly put 300 at it but you'd be visiting your local shops getting replacement pistons and rods on a regular basis.

I sprayed 225rwhp on my stock bottom end for a few dyno runs and a few runs on the street, but I would not recommend doing it for long periods of time.

I don't think the bottom end will last with a 300 shot.

maybe I'm misinformed but I was under the impression it was either "you broke it" or "you didn't"... As long as the system was maintained and it didn't burn up the engine then the primary consern was breaking rods/pistons or breaking the crank. If you don't break them.. then they're fine...
Also, I am planning on using this as a street/strip so the NOS would be used maybe every other weekend or less. Would this be considered heavy or light usage? Thanx

Definition of heavy usage = the one time you spray and all hell breaks loose. To be perfectly honest, the first time you spray 300, that's heavy usage IMO. The stock setup is not built to take it. And the few guys that claim to run 300 stock bottom end are not telling you how many times they are replacing pistons. Keep in mind that it's not scientific that it's going to break on the 3rd try. When it's going to go it is certainly going to do one of at least three things and you'll be SOL.

1) Eat a ringland
2) Hole a piston
3) Chunck a rod

No one that I am aware of has flat out broken a stock crank. I still use a stock crank in my car, have sprayed 200 and 300 on it many times and it is still in good shape. Now you can trash a crankshaft if you chunk a rod and it wedges into the crankshaft.

I'm one of the guys spraying a huge shot on my stock bottom end...about a 270 shot or so. Took a LOT of time to get the tune down packed, and every time I spray it I'm basically risking taking out a piston or throwing a stock rod. It's your choice really...if you can take the risk and really want to do it, go for it. If not, then back it down and have fun with it and not have to worry about it so much.

Ok.. so lets say I don't wanna put a big risk on it... where should my cutoff be? I've seen alot of guys run 125-150 shots and they practically lived on the bottle... Should the "safer" line be 150? 175? 225? Basically I'm lookin' for some educated guesses.. I understand it's not perfect but I am going to be very meticulas with my set up. In fact I will be running a seperate fuel system to supply racing 115 to the nitrous. I will also be using a window switch to stop an over-rev. Any other suggestions to make it more efficent or safe would be greatly appreciated...

Your cutoff should be below 150 shot and still get a good tune. If you need more than that to beat most of the weekend warriors then you need to build the bottom end. I have seen people spray a stock shortblock many times with a 250 shot, but they reduced a boat load of timing and ALWAYS ran RACE GAS when they sprayed. I dont plan to spray a 300 shot on my built 408ci. If someone can beat me when I am spraying between a 150 to 200 shot then they need to win. I will not risk my motor to try to beat everyone. There is always someone faster..

Well, you said NOS in a previous post, so I sould say you could put at least 500 shot of naws on it as long as you had the APC stickers to back it up...and some neon underneath wouldn't hurt either.

Make sure you get two bottles, the big ones....

Watch out though. If you don't double clutch you'll blow the welds on the manifold.

ok.. ignorant comments are not needed. Go get an education and find out what NOS stands for... Nitrous Oxide Systems... if I were referring to the chemical itself I would say NO2.. you cant use no2 without a nos... it's gotta get there somehow... so please leave the heckling out and give some suggestions. I'm new to an LS1.. not racing or engines... screw the stickers and you can have your plush leather and body panels.. I"m rollin' in a full body 68 with a 406 that will blow most doors off... all motor. so help a guy get an education about the motor. I know plenty about NO2.

First off, it is N2O. Not NO2. You know, 2 parts nitrogen, 1 part oxygen.

My car is a good example of what you are trying to do. I have a few boltons and a single stage NX wet shot. I usually spray anywhere from 150-175 shot. If I have the money, I will usually throw some 101 unleaded in the tank when I spray the 175shot, just for GPs. I am still running the stock fuel system and bottom end (stock timing as well). I've been doing this combo for a year now using the spray very often (every weekend and occasionaly during the week). Install and use the nitrous correctly and you should be fine up to a 175 shot. After that, look into upgrading pistons and atleast rod bolts. Also, I would throw a walboro 340 pump in just for insurance. This is my next mod besides my cam.

see... good correction.. no sarcastic remarks.. my apologies... looking for a subscript button and getting irritated causes silly mistakes... but that's the kind of advice I"m lookin' for... Do you spray off the line or wait till second gear?

No problem.

If I'm running on my nittos, no. I roll out and hit it about 20-40 ft out, depending on the surface I'm running on, ie. concrete, blacktop, etc. If I'm on my ET streets, I'll hit it right out of the hole or a couple of feet out, again, based off the surface and how my car is acting. A friend of mine has a 2001 SS with a 175 shot for 2 yrs. That's all he would spray, no less. He recently went up to 200 shot and not long after he popped a head gasket and also cracked the block. IMO, I would stay under 175shot on stock bottom end and atleast do an intank fuel pump upgrade. Good luck.

Ignorant comments are not needed you're right. However, I believe amusing ones are welcome.

As already stated it is Obviously N2O. Other names for this gas are:
DINITROGEN MONOXIDE (this is currently taught in chemistry because -ic and -ous are being phased out)

Nitrous Oxide (the most common name)

Speaking of education: NOS is not the only company on this beautiful planet producing the items neccessary to deliver dinitrogen monoxide to an engine.

Here are some of Nitrous Oxide Systems competitors:
Nitrous Express
Edelbrock
Compucar
Nitrous Works
Dynotune
and many more also produce and or sell the items necessary.

Any of the above companies would love to sell you their products.

Now would be a opportune time to say : "Please do not watch any more 2Fast 2Furious." but that wouldn't be appropriate.

thanks and good luck.

My appologize for the quick temper... long hours and little sleep make me touchy and it's hard to read sarcasm... I have just had a hard time earning respect in the local racer crowd as I am 23 and i build my own stuff. So please forgive the touchy attitude..... and thanx for all the help.... I'm gonna talk to some local builders about the engine before I put it in and possibly make some up grades... I'll let ya know how it runs out....

OK well i know the stock bottm end will not stay together with 300 shot u mite make it to the 60 foot mark before BOOM. I put a 250 shot in 2 stages on a few cars witch runs really well stage 1 dry and stage 2 wet with LPD bottle upside down not some thing to do unless u know what u r doing all 3 cars still runing strong first one was done over 2 years ago and gets used all the time.
