I thought the reasons for using colder plugs were: 1) colder temp reduces chances of detonation; and 2) smaller gap reduces chances of spark blowing out due to higher cylinder pressure. If you cut the groud strap, it seems like that would make the gap larger, negating the effect of #2 above.
