Can a nitrous bottle blow up?

So I'm getting a Nitrous kit for my 01 Trans Am. Over the past few months of talking to people and reading stories about nitrous, I've came across very few stories of how bottles blew up. Is this true? If it is, how do I prevent this from happening?

I plan on mounting the nitrous bottle in between my rear seats. Can the sun shining down on it all day make the pressure in the bottle so great that it can blow up? I dont know what website I was on, but I saw a picture of a car that had the nitrous bottle explode inside of it. It kind of scares me that a bottle with 1000 psi is going to be right behind me in the car.

Of course I'm not going to heat the bottle with a torch, or do anything stupid with it. I'm just wondering what you guies think. I personally dont know anyone who's had any problems with their nitrous kits...and I know a good handfull of people with them.

The bottles can explode, but only if you override the safety features of the bottle. The instances of explosure have occured when the Owner futzed around with the burst disc. If the pressure gets to high in the bottle, the disc will burst and the N2O will vent through the blow down tube outside the car.

a friend of mine had his burst disc blow because of the sun, and it was rteally packed with nitrous. When a disc blows like that all that happens is you lose all of your nitrous and sometimes the bottle falls over and spins from the pressure release. Only 1 time i have seen one blow, i was at MIR for a race when behind me i heard a pop when i turned around i saw it was someones bottle had the disc blown, and it was bouncing all over the ground.

What do you mean "the bottle falls over and spins"? It shouldn't go anywhere if it's secured right. Hmmmm

He's talking about if its standing upright on the ground outside of the car. They only have one disc, one hole for the nitrous to escape from. Unlike a scuba tank that has 3 equally spaced around the top nozzle, so if those burst they equally spray in 3 directions so the bottle doesn't move at all. A scuba tank would kill someone though, so....

Here's the pic of the jackass' Maxima after he popped his bottle. He's blaming NX for faulty rupture discs. I wonder how the psi reached 3,500+ sitting in the garage (word has it his heater wasn't wired to a switched ingnition source). Rumor also has it that he screwed with the discs anyway.

I think most companies aim to have them rupture at around 2,000-2,500psi. I've been told that most of the bottles on the market are made to handle 3,500+psi.

Your leaking was probrably from a fitting that wasn't tight enough to handle the pressure.

yeah that is what i meant..sorry. but the bottle was outside on the ground and it had been sitting in the sun all day.

No No, before you could ever spray your Maxima you have to put some stickers on it and call it a race car. Here's the real before picture. I almost think this whole thing was a ******* joke.
